Summary:
The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development, manufacture, installation, and testing of control systems and the engineering documentation required to support these activities. Collaboration with Group Leaders and assigned Project Managers, in an effort to track and manage associated budgets and schedules, is considered an important element of the job. Interaction with project team members and customer contacts is expected. Depending upon project or assignment scope, the Controls Engineer is expected to provide technical direction to the manufacturing and purchasing departments.
Primary Responsibilities:
Technical Responsibility: Assume technical responsibility for all assigned elements of controls system design. Interface with the project team to ensure optimum and proper system application. Deliver accurate and timely documentation. Ensure all designs meet applicable codes and standards for safety, format, convention, and customer requirements. To prepare design support documentation, conduct performance and control system design calculations and maintain concise engineering records. To define sub-system design specifications and where appropriate software requirements and interface control specifications, which meet the customer's requirements from the system level specification. Provide stand alone control system specifications for subcontracts which reflect the customer's requirements.
Customer and Project Team Communications: Interface with customer and project team members in a timely and professional manner and strive to meet all internal and external expectations. Work closely with production to ensure proper application and integration of all mechanical system components. Establish complete interface of control systems with customer facilities and negotiate details of these connections with customer staff(s). Define robust conceptual and detail control system designs and supporting performance predictions and models to satisfy the customer's requirements.
Engineering Budget and Schedule Management: Assume responsibility for adherence to budget and schedule for assigned project elements. Collaborate with group leaders, project managers and project team members to ensure adherence to budget and schedule, and promptly notify management of any deviation from plan.
Supplier and Purchasing Department Interface: Develop technical specifications to allow for competitive bidding on key controls system components. Communicate with suppliers to ensure appropriate technical application and capability of components and subsystems to be purchased for assigned projects. Provide technical support and direction to purchasing agents during the purchase process. Participate in scope definition for any subcontractor efforts used to accomplish these tasks. Provide filed oversight of subcontractors efforts to verify successful completion of tasks.
Sales and Service Department Support: Provides technical concepts and cost estimates as needed to support sales and marketing efforts. Supports customer needs in a timely and professional manner. Demonstrate appropriate sense of urgency and understanding of customer service support.
Corporate Initiatives Support: Internal and external support of Petersen's corporate image, initiatives, and business plans-through positive interaction with the management team.
