  Job Description

  About the Role

Wirecutter is seeking a creative, inspiring, and dynamic editorial director to join its editorial leadership team. You should be a seasoned editorial leader with an impressive track record of leading teams that produce exceptional journalism that reaches substantial audiences. You should love what Wirecutter does and be an evangelist for our mission, and be bursting with smart, innovative ideas to refine and elevate the work we do to serve our audience.

As an editorial director, you will be a critical member of Wirecutter’s editorial leadership team, taking a strong hand in the strategy, planning, and oversight operations for our 130-person newsroom. You will report directly to Wirecutter’s editor-in-chief, and oversee dozens of journalists, including our deals team. You will be empowered to own the strategic direction of your coverage areas and teams, and will be expected to lead them to produce best-in-class journalism that has a big impact. You will work closely with strategic partners throughout other Wirecutter departments (Product, Engineering, Design, etc) and the broader Times to help realize Wirecutter’s ambitious long-term goals.

This is a tremendous opportunity for an ambitious and creative leader with big ideas, proven expertise, infectious enthusiasm, and great leadership skills to play a big role in shaping Wirecutter’s future success. This job has the potential to be remote, though New York City based applicants are preferred.

  Responsibilities:

Work closely with the editor-in-chief to lead Wirecutter’s 130-person editorial team, playing a key leadership role in overall editorial strategy and direction.

Directly oversee and be accountable for the work of dozens of journalists, a small handful of whom will report directly to you.

Develop and execute plans to ensure your portion of the catalog is excellent and up to date at all times.

Conceive and execute plans for ambitious and innovative packages, pieces, and initiatives beyond our core guide work.

Ensure our work is reaching and helping as many people as possible.

Collect and analyze audience analytics to make data-informed coverage decisions.

Mentor and inspire the journalists on your team, getting them excited about the work they do, providing clear guidance and feedback, and offering plentiful opportunities for each journalist’s career development.

  Basic Qualifications:

10+ years working at major publications

5+ years leadership or senior management experience overseeing large teams at a major publication

  Exceptional editorial judgment and confidence

Substantial understanding of and passion for audience analytics, and demonstrated track record of growing audience at a major publication

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and in person. Experience communicating with senior executives.

  Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain and motivate team; willingness to delegate responsibilities and ability to effectively lead

Passion for Wirecutter’s mission and a commitment to be a part of our innovation and growth

The annual base pay range for this role is between $140,000 and $210,000.
