  Deputy Recruit – Certified testing will be done on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and Saturday, February 17th, 2024 at Department of Public Works, 3275 Akers Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80922

  Salary to be commensurate with qualifications

  This is an in-person position and is not eligible for remote work.

  Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

  Midnight or Day Shift; Four days on and three days off, and then the next week is three days on and four days off.12 Hour Shifts

  Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non­-exempt.

  Responsible for attendance in and successful completion of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Certified Academy. Performs duties and responsibilities associated with POST and policy driven mandates to include Arrest Control, Driving, Firearms, Physical Fitness, and classroom instruction. Enforces federal laws, state laws, and county ordinances and codes. Patrols an assigned district under direct supervision. Enforces applicable civil statutes; answers service calls, conducts criminal investigations; issues summons and complaints, files cases with the District Attorney's Office and testifies in court. This position is part of the Deputy Sheriff career progression series, which includes Deputy Recruit and Deputy Sheriff. An employee is eligible to advance to the next position within the series when the employee has met the criteria for advancement as notated within the job description and has received a recommendation from the Hiring Authority.

  Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  Answers service calls for an assigned district and takes appropriate enforcement action or conducts follow-up investigation, as appropriate. Patrols the County to detect illegal activities; assists citizens involved in traffic accidents; ensures the safety and security of citizens by making arrests, quieting disturbances, and using physical and/or deadly force as required.

  Pursues fleeing suspects or prisoners on foot or vehicle; climbs, crawls, jumps and runs to pursue suspects and protect life; pushes/pulls, lifts, or carries persons or suspects/prisoners who may be injured, unconscious or incapacitated; effects forceful arrests.

  Processes crime scenes by fingerprinting, photographing, identifying, packaging, and processing evidence.

  Writes and files reports by gathering facts, statements, and evidence; prepares and files affidavits.

  Enforces traffic codes and regulations; writes traffic summons, as appropriate, including DUI enforcement.

  Testifies in court on matters relating to criminal offenses, traffic, and civil matters.

  Serves summons, complaints, warrants, and civil processes.

  Contacts citizens and businesses in assigned district to identify ongoing problems and recommend solutions for resolution.

  Attends briefings before shift to become aware of any incidents occurring since previous duty assignment. Reports any critical incidents occurring within the assigned patrol district to Shift Sergeant.

  Assists other Deputies on service calls when necessary.

  Performs other duties as required.

  Qualifications

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  Successful completion of the EPSO POST Certified Academy required. El Paso County Sheriff's Office will provide P.O.S.T certification course.

  Must be at least 21 years of age at time of graduation.

  Successful completion of the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.

  Must be honest, truthful, trustworthy, and possess a high degree of personal and professional integrity.

  Knowledge of federal and state laws and statues concerning inmate rights and local regulations, ordinances, and laws concerning areas of responsibility, as well as knowledge of El Paso County Policies and Procedures.

  Must possess good judgment and common sense to make competent decisions, as well as prioritize duties under stressful conditions.

  Good observation skills and ability to work with the criminal population, which is known to be dangerous, threatening, demanding, and manipulative.

  Ability to affect forceful arrest and control the person being taken into custody; ability to qualify with assigned weapon system in a safe manner in compliance with policy and procedure; ability to meet the physical demands of the position by maintaining physical condition and fitness; ability to exert 175 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently to carry, push, pull, or move objects; ability to climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, feel, finger, talk, smell, hear, possess normal color vision, and see (20/20 correctable, depth perception, and near and far acuity).

  Must be able to use and determine the appropriate use of physical and deadly force when required.

  Ability to hear and speak clearly on a police radio.

  Ability to write and type clear, concise, and complete reports.

  Ability to communicate with the public, staff, and other agencies in a professional and courteous manner.

  Ability to use office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, fax machine, and copier.

  Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

  Required Education and Experience:

  High school diploma or equivalent education.

  Licenses/Certificates:

  Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License.

  Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification upon successful completion of the EPSO POST Certified Academy.

  Ability to obtain Colorado POST Law Enforcement Certification upon successful completion of the EPSO Post Academy.

  Must obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Compliance within six months of employment.

  Pre-Employment Requirements:

  Must pass background investigation, truth verification examination, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, physical examination, and psychological evaluation. Color vision testing is required.Work Conditions

  Duties may be performed in a classroom setting or in an outdoor environment with exposure to inclement weather. Some degree of hazard to personal safety with exposure to violent suspects and contagious diseases. May be required to view the nude body of persons of the opposite sex for security reasons. Position requires shift work to ensure coverage for operations in a 24-hour 7-day week: will be required to work days, evenings, and/or overnights depending on shift assignment. Will be expected to work weekends and holidays.
