  Summary:

  Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, the Day Treatment Nurse participates in and helps manage the activities and daily operations of the health office as well as ensuring an optimal level of medical and health care for the Children of St. Catherine’s Center for Children.

  This is a full-time position, Mon-Fri: 8am-4pm -- w/ some flexibility Offering a sign-on bonus of $5,000 *

  This position follows the R&E May School Calendar Holidays and Recesses!

  Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  Builds positive, therapeutic relationships with students and families of students in the Day Treatment program.

  Builds positive relationships with school and nursing department staff.

  Greets students daily and completes a “once over” on each student and directs them to the health office for follow ups as needed.

  Monitors the building radio, PA intercom and phones for nursing calls. Responding to requests as appropriate.

  Provides care for student illness and first aid for injuries that occur during the school day, in both the health office and throughout the two-story school building and grounds.

  Facilitates and administers scheduled and PRN medications during school hours at appropriate times, as ordered by provider and approved by guardian.

  Documents all assessments and treatment provided to students, including administered medication.

  Notifies parents/guardians and residential nursing staff in a timely manner regarding all illnesses and injuries.

  Documents significant interactions with parents, families, staff and other care team members related to student health care.

  Assists the Director of Nursing and the Nurse Practitioner with psychotropic medication management, as needed, including scheduling, organizing, and facilitating medication review meetings, following provider orders to make medication changes in MAR and electronic record, communicating changes to pertinent team members, and tracking medication refills.

  Confers with and functions as a resource for Nurse Practitioner, teachers, therapists and program administrators concerning health and medical problems of the students in the day treatment program and assesses student needs as they arise.

  Educates students, family, staff about medications, side effects, and health conditions.

  Upholds confidentiality of PHI and educational information as required by HIPAA and FERPA.

  Helps families access community health care for students by assisting them to navigate insurance, obtain appointments, and identify and brainstorm ways to work through barriers.

  Observes physical interventions (restraints), assesses for student safety throughout restraints and directs staff to terminate or alter restraints as needed, assesses student post-restraint, provides post-restraint care as applicable, thoroughly documents observations and assessments as appropriate.

  Accurately inventories school’s supply of scheduled and PRN medications as well as health office supplies. Ordering supply refills. This includes med cart, supply cabinets, storage room, clothing closet, and laundry.

  Regularly inspects, cleans, replaces health office equipment. Ordering replacement equipment. This includes vital signs equipment, AED, and hearing/vision equipment.

  Coordinates with Director of Nursing and other team members to develop guidance and decision-making recommendations for school around health and safety initiatives.

  Conducts student admission/intake assessments.

  Perform vital sign measurements for each student on a monthly basis, alert Director of Nursing of significant findings, document measurements.

  Verifies that students have annual physical examinations and immunizations as required by NYSED regulation; conducts annual student vision screenings, hearing screenings, and other mandates as required by regulations.

  Ensures that necessary medical records are obtained from community providers and uploaded to AWARDS in a timely fashion.

  Develops and implements, under the advisement of the Director of Nursing, health care plans for special needs students.

  Regularly participates in Nursing Department and School staff meetings.

  Ensures that all program documentation/logs/records are completed accurately, including AWARDS data entry, as required by agency policy and regulatory bodies.

  Ensures that communication and coordination occur between Day Treatment and Residential nursing staff so that there is integrated service planning for the children who are clients of both programs.

  Provides timely review and response for all incident reports involving nursing and for those that involve injury, illness or medical needs of the students, according to required agency and regulatory protocols/procedures.

  Maintain compliance with RN licensure, CPR/First Aid, mandated reporter, infection control, mTBI, and all other trainings required by agency, state, or oversight bodies.

  Seeks out opportunities to advance professional development.

  Additional position-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing.

  Position Specifications/Requirements:

  Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred; Associates in Nursing considered, with RN license.

  Current and unencumbered New York State RN licensure, required.

  Experience in pediatric and psychiatric nursing with children who exhibit significant emotional, behavioral and interpersonal challenges, preferred.

  Current CPR/First Aid Certification.

  Must have the ability to pass required pre-employment background checks.
