The Position
Corrections Counselors within in the Nevada Department of Corrections provide mental health services to offenders in a correctional setting including interviews, behavioral planning and implementation, consultation, psycho-educational classes, research, and training.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. The Corrections Counselor V supervises at least one Corrections Counselor IV including performance evaluations, work performance standards, scheduling work assignment and review, training and discipline and may also supervise owe-level professionals, technical and/or administrative staff as needed. This position may also perform advanced programmatic work.
The Corrections Counselor V will provide psychological testing, assessments, treatment planning and implementation, psychotherapy, consultation, psycho-educational classes, research and training. Duties include performing psychological evaluations, to select and administer appropriate psychological tests, interpret results, and interview individuals to determine treatment, programming or placement needs. Provide psychotherapeutic services utilizing individual and group therapy, biofeedback therapy, relaxation training, substance abuse and pain management counseling. Psychologists diagnose mental illness and other related illnesses; may provide oral and written court testimony; provide the degree of disability/credibility of inmates; staff a walk-in psychology clinic; participate in crisis intervention; provide Parole Board evaluations; provide quality assurance in the form of ensuring quality care, to monitor psychological services; provide medical documentation of progress notes; participate in interdisciplinary classification committee meetings and treatment team meetings. A typical Work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but is subject to change. Extended hours and overtime may be required on short notice in cases of emergency. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in clinical psychology, psychology, counseling, education, social work, or closely related field and four years of post-doctoral experience providing therapy, psychological testing and rehabilitative programs to clients or offenders in a correctional, rehabilitative, clinic or institutional setting, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR a Doctoral degree (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology from an accredited school of professional psychology and four years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Corrections Counselor IV in Nevada State service.Special Requirements
