The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) team is seeking a Communications Payload Systems Engineer (Level 2, 3, or 4) to join the team in El Segundo, CA in support of space-based programs. TheSpace, Intelligence & Weapon Systems division creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit. The position provides an opportunity to be part of an interdisciplinary team to develop a unique communication system (both RF and Optical) for space vehicles to meet challenging requirements on dynamic development programs.
We work with customers in the development of the next-generation technologies in space. Our teamfocuses on rapid prototyping to demonstrate a host of mission-focused technologies for a variety of customers. Our group works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.
Primary Responsibilities:
Work closely with other engineering disciplines in an integrated team environment to develop communication system architecture in compliance with interface definitions and system/subsystem requirements
Work with customers and suppliers to develop and document space vehicle communication system, sub-system, and supplier requirements on a program with multiple suppliers
Perform analysis and translation of requirements into system architecture, hardware and software designs and interface specifications
Develop and execute trade studies to make design decisions
Develop requirements verification plan, including coordination of required tests for space systems
Analyze, verify, and validate performance of hardware and software components in a space system
Support planning for and execution of subsystem and vehicle-level integration and test activities
Leads the resolution of technical issues that arise during development, qualification, functional integration and operational testing, including supplier technical issues.
Work within a Model Based System Engineering environment using Cameo as the tool
Develop use cases and sequence diagrams
Develop and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for complex space and ground architectures
Work within an agile development environment using JIRA and Confluence as project management tools
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location. This worksite participates in Boeing's optional 9/80 schedule rotation. 9/80 is a rotation in which employees can work 9-hour shifts, 8 days per pay period (bi-weekly) and receive every other Friday off.
This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).
Special Program Access or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
Experience with communications subsystems or units
Experience with digital payload design, analysis, development, and verification
Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:
Level 3: 5+ years of work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Level 4: 9+ years of work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Electrical Engineering degree
Experience with spacecraft and/or space systems RF and/or Optical systems
Experience with trade studies, requirements development, verification/validation, ICDs, and supplier technical management
Experience in development, build and test of spacecraft
Experience with requirements development, verification, validation, ICDs, risk, issues and opportunities management and trade studies
Experience utilizing Model Based Engineering (MBE or MBSE) tools
Tier 5/SSBI investigation highly desired
Typical Education/Experience:
Associate (Level 2)
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Experienced (Level 3)
Bachelor's degree and typically 5 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 3 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Lead (Level 4)
Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary Pay Range - Associate, Level 2: $87,550 - $118,450
Summary Pay Range - Experienced, Level 3: $104,550 - $141,450
Summary Pay Range - Lead, Level 4: $128,350 - $173,650
