  Salary Grade Equivalent: NC05 Recruitment Range: $31,688-$55,453

  This posting is intended to fill a total of (2) two Transportation Worker II positions: 60018095, and 60018166. You only need to apply once to be considered for all positions.

  Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Responsibilities include installing traffic control, performing chip seal operations, performing crack seal operations, pavement repair, snow removal operations, inspecting contract work and operating heavy equipment. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including chip spreader, tandem dump truck, quad dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. Work may require lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.

  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.

  Experience in one of the following: Shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.

  Knowledge of Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures.

  Experience in the operation of at least two (2) pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.

  Additional Expectations:

  Ability to carry out complete oral and written instructions. Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking, and hearing. Must be able to effectively communicate the English language. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with 360 days to obtain a license. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. This position may be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates.   High School or General Educational Development diploma and (3) three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
