The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories. This position will support working from home part-time. Candidates must reside in our in our area to be able to report on-site when needed.
The Data Management Division (DMD) is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer (Cloud Infrastructure) to help design and develop on-line platforms, software tools, and standards for astronomical data.
The Software Engineer (Cloud Infrastructure) Role
You will work in a cloud computing environment to maintain STScI’s position as a world leader in the development of high-quality software and science ready data products for astronomy to support astronomers around the world. You will work with a team of software developers and astronomers to deliver critical science products, data processing tools and cloud-based platforms, all working collaboratively to advance the frontiers of astronomy.
Responsibilities include:
Design, implement, deploy and lead the implementation of AWS cloud solutions
Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and/or AWS CodeBuild
Automate the provisioning and configuration of cloud infrastructure, applications and services using Python, BASH, Ansible, Terraform, Cloudformation and other automation technologies and languages.
Provide production support for cloud infrastructure
Build monitoring, custom dashboards and reporting capabilities using Datadog
Your Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
You’re a creative, highly motivated, engaged and driven Cloud Engineer looking for an exciting opportunity to advance state-of-the-art data management services. You can work across teams and organizations to develop a shared purpose, vision, and strategy for moving our missions forward. You have experience designing and securing applications by incorporating cloud architecture best practices, infrastructure as code, and automation to deploy high-quality services in an AWS cloud environment. You thrive in an environment that offers you significant freedom to develop novel solutions but you also have a proven commitment to excellence. You may have experience with scientific programming and the Jupyter ecosystem, data archives, or working with cloud data storage management.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Software Engineering or a relevant field with a minimum of 2 years working experience in an AWS Cloud environment.
Cloud compute experience
Ability to automate and write high-quality, well-designed software and scripts using Python and BASH
Basic understanding of Networking
OS level knowledge and experience, comfortable working in a Linux environment
U.S. citizen or permanent resident for ITAR
Desirable, but not required
Object-oriented design
Experience with Containerization (Docker, Podman, etc.)
Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, CloudFormation, GitHub Actions and/or AWS CodeBuild
Worked in an Agile development environment
Git workflows and best practices
Security best practices
Server and Serverless computing
Experience with Jira and Confluence
Experience with scientific data archives
The starting position and salary range is $115k to $140k. It is commensurate with education and experience.
