Created in 2022, ASBX has the mission of creating the world’s best builder experience across tens of thousands of software engineers across all of Amazon. We work to unlock their ability to build software for hundreds of millions of customers across dozens of technology domains (cloud, commerce, devices, advertising, media, drones, logistics, and much more).
As a Sr Principal Scientist, you will act as the Empirical Software Development and Software Analytics expert across all of Amazon. You will set the vision for how we use science research to understand all aspects of the software development process (from Day-1 onboarding to operation at scales of millions of transactions per second). You will connect science and technical strategies, enabling us to turn insights into actions for improvement across thousands of software teams. Leveraging your expertise in both theory and practice of Empirical Software Development, you will be a strategic advisor to executives across Amazon, including key members of Amazon’s S-teams. Your practical, clinical advice will drive improvements in how we manage, build, and operate software at Amazon-scale.
You will see around corners and identify business problems that may impact how we build software a few years out. You will explore problems that are unique and unsolved (at scales seen by few others), proposing and delivering solutions that translate scientific research and business judgment into actions that improve practices of software development across Amazon. You will lead writing efforts of notable internal or external publications that validate originality, inspiring new lines of research in the practice of software development, inspiring internal and external science communities.
With your reputation in advancing current science your impact will be beyond your immediate research circles to influence research in adjacent disciplines and beyond. Your experience in identifying and delivering mechanisms will improve scientific knowledge integration into how we practice software development.

Basic Qualifications
• PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics
• 15+ years of experience in the fields of software engineering analytics, software analytics, software service analytics, or developer operations
• A track record of world-class publication in related disciplines
• Demonstrated expertise in both theory and practice of developer experience (“dev-ex”) / developer productivity
• Hands-on experience with a broad range of qualitative and quantitative research methods
• Experience in multi-tasking and taking input from various teams and sources to scope user research work with effective prioritization.
• Excellent verb and written communication skills with demonstrated experience effectively advising senior management and executives
Preferred Qualifications
• Exceptional relationship skills including the ability to discover the true requirements underlying feature requests, recommend alternative technical and business approaches within techno-social systems
• Exceptional ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences, including large technical audiences, senior management, and customers.
• Track record of developing intellectual property in the fields of software development analytics, developer experience, or developer operations.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $240,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $350,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
