About Science Camp Director

  Basic Job Functions

  Supervise the daily tasks inherent in running a safe outdoor science day camp program that uses the 250 acres of the New York Botanical Garden as a source of inspiration for lessons and excursions. Each camp consists of up to 3 groups of up to 18 children plus assigned staff that work with them for a 3-week cycle (July OR August). Establish routines and protocols to support the daily and weekly functioning of camp. Facilitate positive communication with campers and families to provide the best possible experience. Coordinate the planning and implementation of camper opening and closing meetings for each day. Support educators in developing engaging lesson plans, procuring supplies and planning daily schedules, including supervising breaks for educators and explainers.

  Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

  Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain close communication with Parents, Camp Educators and ECAG staff to mitigate health, behavioral and scheduling issues

  • Supervise daily drop-off and pick-up events with the help of Explainers and Educators, including sign in/out, health screening forms and temperature checks

  • Support Camp Educators in adhering to Camp Curriculum when developing and implementing innovative outdoor activities and excursions around the Garden campus

  • Maintain supply inventory

  • Coordinate daily and weekly camp schedule with Educators

  • Supervise the coordination of opening and closing meetings, lunches, snacks, breaks for staff and campers with Educators

  • Build strong relationships with Camp staff, Campers and their Families

  • Step in as a substitute for unplanned educator absences.

  Pay rate: $30/hr

  Qualifications

  Outgoing personality, excellent oral communications skills, thoughtful problem solver and highly detail-oriented are essential to the position. Candidate must be mature, responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, self-starter and able to mentor adults and teens in best outdoor science teaching practices. A bachelor’s degree, master's and/or supervisory experience preferred in science, education and/or museum studies required. Candidate must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and have experience teaching outdoors with live plants and organic matter. Foreign language is helpful but not essential

  Availability required: prep in May/June, flexible days/times; including letters to camp families and development of activities for training/onboarding of educators (June 18-28, 2024, 9am-5pm) and camp explainers (June 27 & 28, 2024, 9am-5pm); July camp, 8am-5pm, July 1-19 (no camp July 4) and/or August camp, 8am-5pm, July 29-August 16, 2024.
