Job Description
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to carry out fundamental and applied research supporting the SPARC and ARC tokamaks, two devices expected to lead to the deployment of fusion as an economic energy source. The work will focus on the identification and study of MHD modes that can arise in different SPARC scenarios, as well as the development of synthetic diagnostic and analysis tools to characterize MHD modes. Will conduct simulations with the state-of-the-art extended-MHD code, M3D-C1, and develop or employ tools for mode characterization; interface with broader teams that will explore the role of these 3D fields in fast particle dynamics; make original research contributions to the PSFC program; produce work for publication and present at scientific conferences; and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in plasma physics or closely related field; broad knowledge of tokamak physics; experience conducting original scientific research and publishing in scientific journals; and the ability to communicate effectively and work in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented environment with staff and students from MIT, other universities, national laboratories, and private industry. PREFERRED: experience with nonlinear MHD; programming skills and knowledge of a programming language such as Python; and experience analyzing data from tokamaks derived from fluctuation diagnostics, particularly Mirnov coils, using statistical signal processing. Job #23593In addition to applying via the MIT website, applicants are asked to email (with MHD Postdoc Application in the subject line) a cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information of three references to Dr. Cesar Clauser at [email protected] appointment is initially for two years and renewable annually based upon satisfactory performance. This position is eligible for visa sponsorship.Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check.1/8/24
