  Description

  The Core Networking team is looking for a Sr. Network Development Manager to join our Network Fabric Engineering (NFE) team. As a Network Development Manager, you will be responsible for managing teams that build, deploy and scale the Amazon networks that support AWS, customers, and other business units, across multiple global datacenters.

  AWS Core Networking is focused on building Data Centers and the network that allows Data Centers to function efficiently. They own the solutions that allow racks to be aggregated and Data Centers to be interconnected. Core Networking's goal is to balance efficiency, performance and reliability to allow customers access to their applications and data.

  Amazon’s network is a key differentiator for Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across hundreds of thousands of servers worldwide. The AWS Networking team develops and operates the network platform for all of Amazon, including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions.   As part of this Network Development Manager role, a successful candidate will be responsible for managing one of our global teams aligned with one of our network fabrics. Direct reports will include Network Development Engineers, who own design and optimization of the future state of the global Amazon network. The Topology team is expected to identify optimal and efficient designs to manage traffic flows, failure scenarios and optimal capacity. The team is also responsible for deep-dive and root-cause analysis of events, which impact our customers ensuring that we improve our processes and designs in order to avoid customer impact in the future. AWS leaders are highly-technical and understand their environment to accurately represent operational issues and exercise high judgment during high severity events. As the manager of one of our Topology teams, successful candidates will be responsible for setting and delivering on the strategic vision for the team.

  Key job responsibilities

  Operational Excellence

  As a manager within the Networking team you will be expected to drive operational excellence in everything we do. This includes creating sane processes, procedures and automation to improve efficiency in our day-to-day tasks and projects.. You will work closely on supporting our internal customers and ensuring that their needs and issues are being addressed.

  Network Measurement

  As a Network Engineering manager you will be expected to drive quality into the metrics we report to assist us in focusing on the areas that give us the best ROI. This includes measurement of our project plans, build schedules, issues, and cycle times.

  Performance Management/Team Health

  You will own all facets of performance and career management for the team. Regular one-on-one meetings with all team members are required. You will be expected to provide both technical and ‘soft skill’ mentoring in order to maintain a well-rounded, world-class organization. This includes project management, quality audits and coordination of training sessions with senior-level engineers as well as day-to-day oversight of the team including scheduling of a 7x12x365 operational rota.

  Incident/Change Management

  You will be integral to developing and improving incident and change management within the Networking space. Responsibilities include driving initiatives regarding improvements to existing tools & processes and providing feedback on new practices & procedures in order to scale with the rapid expansion of the Amazon platform and customer base.

  Recruiting and Hiring

  You will take the lead in hiring quality personnel who not only fit the needs of the current organization but also will allow the team to scale with platform and service growth. You will coordinate with Amazon and external recruiting staff to evaluate potential candidates, participate in initial phone screens and provide relevant guidance and feedback during on-site interview loops. You will also be responsible for ensuring that proper training takes place for all new hires.

  A day in the life

  • Work in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs.

  • Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.

  • Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.

  • Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.

  About the team

  AWS Network Fabric Engineering (NFE) owns datacenter network services that provide unconstrained connectivity to our customers, such as EC2, EBS, S3 and Amazon CDO Services. We own the networks internal connection to the datacenters end to end, including scaling and operational functions, for both traditional datacenters. We also own newer AWS offerings such as Outposts and Local Zones.

  Basic Qualifications

  8+ years in a technology role and 4+ years in a management role

  3+ years experience representing your team/technical area to senior management

  B.S. in Computer Science or four years’ equivalent experience in a large-scale enterprise environment is required with experience in either a Planning or Network Engineering role highly recommended

  Preferred Qualifications

  Knowledge of major networking protocols, topology design, network hardware and device configuration

  Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills

  The successful candidate will have a proven track record of success in delivering complex projects, including coordinating and driving issues to resolution autonomously utilizing excellent project management skills.

  Must have the ability to contribute to and support long-term visions and direction regarding Networking at Amazon

  Experience in building and managing a team of strong technical people and prior ownership of the operation of a mission-critical team is crucial to success.

  Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $140,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $272,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
