DescriptionSummary: The Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist(MLS) performs routine and complex tests in the medical laboratory toprovide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease and/or injury.Performs other functions that require specific qualifications of MT or MLS,i.e. quality control, competency assessment.
Essential Job Functions:
Determines normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conductingchemical analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluids and other body fluids.
Analyze blood cells by counting and identifying cells, using microscopictechniques and procedures.
Ensures operation of all laboratory equipment is appropriate bycalibrating, completing preventive maintenance requirements. Maintainsequipment inventories.
Maintains laboratory supplies by checking stock to determine inventorylevel; anticipating needed supplies.
Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as neededto accomplish job results.
Provides medical technology information by answering questions andrequests from other staff members and the public.
Prepares blood for transfusions by conducting blood group, type andcompatibility tests.
Performs blood draws from patient as prescribed through demonstratedstandards for principles of asepsis to obtain samples.
Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control andhazardous waste policies and protocols; following prescribed identificationprocedures.
Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing andsummarizing information. Documents proper notification of medical personnel(physicians, nursing staff) regarding critical report values.
Performs competency assessments when required by Director.
Signs off on quality control reports as needed.
Maintains patient confidence and protects SPRHC by keeping informationconfidential.
Perform other functions as required to fulfill the expectations of theMedical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Specialist.
Requirements
Minimum Required Education/Experience: Bachelor s degree in achemical, physical or biological science or medical technology from anaccredited institution. At least one year of work experience in a laboratorysetting. Additional coursework in medical technology is preferred. Must becertified-eligible (obtain within six months of assignment in role) withthe American Society of Clinical Pathologists or Equivalent.
Pre-Employment Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including abilityto adapt style to fit various patient needs (age, physical needs, etc.).
Advanced skill in phlebotomy processes on all age groups (infant togeriatric).
Ability to engage with and work with other personnel and teams.
Demonstrated ability to complete mathematical concepts, such asprobability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such asfractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Experience in working in classified/confidential work settings;ensuring only approved information is shared or released when approved.
Ability to use office equipment (personal computer, fax, copier,various software applications).
Note: An acceptable combination of education, training and experience thatprovides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.
Necessary Special Requirements: Must obtain annual flu vaccination and anyjob-specific immunizations. Required to submit to TB-Quantiferon test.
Licenses or Certificates: Medical Technologist or Medical LaboratoryScientist Certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathologistsor Equivalent
Unusual Demands: Work is subject to recurring and inflexible deadlines andfrequent interruptions.
