JOB REQUIREMENTS: Duties Duties include, but are not limited to: Appliescomprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology,disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications,procedures as well as the principles and practices of health servicesand the organizational structure to ensure proper code selection.Reviews assigned codes from the current version of several codingsystems to include current versions of the International Classificationof Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and/orHealthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). Adheres to acceptedcoding practices, guidelines and conventions when choosing the mostappropriate diagnosis, operation, procedure, ancillary, or evaluationand management (E/M) code to ensure ethical, accurate, and completecoding. Applies guidelines specific to certain diagnoses, procedures,and other criteria used to classify patients under the VeteransEquitable Resource Allocation (VERA) program that categorizes all VApatients into specific classes representing their clinical conditionsand resource needs. Monitors ever-changing regulatory and policyrequirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum ofservices provided by the VAMC. Timely compliance with coding changes iscrucial to the accuracy of the facility database as well as all costrecovery programs. Assists facility staff with documentationrequirements to completely and accurately reflect the patient careprovided; provides technical support in the areas of regulations andpolicy, coding requirements, resident supervision, reimbursement,workload, accepted nomenclature, and proper sequencing. Directlyconsults with the professional staff for clarification of conflicting orambiguous clinical data. Expertly searches the patient record to finddocumentation justifying code assignment based on an expanded knowledgeof the organization and structure of the patient health record. Uses avariety of computer applications in day-to-day activities and duties,such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and Access; competent in use of the healthrecord applications.
