  Job Summary

  To coordinate major programs and events in the Center for African American Studies, responsible for the effective handling of a wide variety of complex duties in the area of student focused programs and functions for the Center for African American Studies, assist Director as well as other program staff.

  Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  Provide ongoing program management, development, and leadership for CAAS’ Student Development Initiatives.

  This includes (but is not limited to) recruiting student participants, organizing workshops, and hosting events designed to enhance students’ personal and professional development. Supervise student employees.

  Assist with recruiting students to minor in African American Studies, as well as plan events that promote academic and professional development among students who have already declared the minor in African American Studies.

  Help with event planning, programming, and coordination of key aspects of major CAAS events and programs such as the Annual Conference, Opening Lecture, Power Hours as well as other campus and community meetings.

  Plan innovative community education and engagement activities to further CAAS’ impact in local communities.

  Develop, create, and distribute CAAS program information (brochures, materials, etc.)

  Serve as a liaison to student groups and organizations.

  Perform other duties as assigned, including serving on department and university committees.

  Required Qualifications

  Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience working in a higher education environment in a professional capacity or equivalent experience.

  An in-depth understanding of the undergraduate curriculum in African American Studies.

  Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be a contributing member of a team.

  Demonstrated effectiveness working with students across diverse backgrounds.

  Strong communication skills

  Close attention to detail

  Preferred Qualifications

  Master’s degree in a field such as African American Studies, Sociology, or History that examines African American life and culture.

  Experience recruiting students into academic programs.

  Familiarity with external funding opportunities for programming and students .

  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  Must be highly-motivated and collaborative, capable of managing a significant workload and prioritized tasks.

  Strong communication skills, ability to work with UTA’s diverse student body, knowledge of higher education curriculum, manage multi-faceted projects with minimal oversight, intuitively understanding scope of various stakeholders’ needs and working within University standard operating procedures.
