Position Purpose
This position assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining the tutoring component of the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) program; provides academic support including tutoring and informal group instruction in the areas of language arts skills including ESOL, writing and reading to increase retention and academic performance of the AANAPISI participants.
Position Responsibilities
Provide academic tutoring and support services including but not limited to:
Provide instructional support through workshop presentations, one-to-one and small group tutoring in writing and language arts related content areas.
Assist with connecting participants to scholarships and keeping students informed about program activities.
Compiles data as necessary and develops reports regarding the status of students participating in targeted retention programming. Use this information to improve programs, policies, practices, and procedures.
Develop, implement, and evaluate programs to increase student transitions, completion, and the instructional component of AAPI, BIPOC, and other under-represented students.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate or higher degree in English, English as a second language, Humanities, or related field; AND
1 academic year of teaching/tutoring experience in study skills, writing or related field at the high school-level or above including developmental or basic skills development.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and work experience.Preferred Qualifications
BA or BS in Liberal Arts with strong emphasis on good writing skills, critical analysis, and study skills: for example, English, Humanities, or related degree.
Experience overcoming educational barriers like those facing low-income AAPI Students.
Experience with educationally challenged individuals including adults who have low proficiency in English or who have learned English as a second language, non-traditional or returning adult students, students with learning and/or physical disabilities.
Speak and understand one or more of the following languages: Hmong, Karen, Burmese, or Vietnamese
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Ability to take initiative and apply critical thinking in developing effective approaches to learning.
Ability to listen well and help students articulate the support that is needed.
Excellent grammar, punctuation, and composition skills as well as familiarity with literary terms.
