About Web and Technology Librarian

  Job Description:

  BASIC FUNCTION: Serves as Library Webmaster. Provides vision and direction for all aspects of the Library’s online presence. Works collaboratively with library staff to maintain quality online services and resources. Uses data analytics and conducts usability studies to evaluate the effectiveness and accessibility of current user interfaces and identify opportunities for improvements. Monitors trends in emerging technologies and recommends and/or implements new initiatives as appropriate. Works collaboratively with University campus partners such as the University’s Information and Technology Services (ITS) & Marketing and Communications to resolve issues, stay abreast of campus IT initiatives, and meet the needs of the library. Performs general technology troubleshooting and oversees the management of all computers and equipment.

  UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: Physical requirements: mobility; must be able to lift materials off shelf. Availability for evening and weekend work, as needed, is required.

  EDUCATION: Master’s degree required. A master’s degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or a master’s degree in a technology-related field is desirable.

  ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE:

  Two or more years of experience designing, building, and maintaining websites. Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  Familiarity with web accessibility standards (WCAG 3.0), information architecture, content strategy for the web, and content management systems.

  Familiarity with responsive design and website best practices and standards.

  Ability to use technology in creative ways to solve problems and/or facilitate workflows.

  Creative approach to the development of new services and commitment to responsive and innovative service.

  Ability to interact effectively and work productively and collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups across the University.

  Must be able to meet deadlines and multiple demands.

  Demonstrated familiarity with technology training and documentation.

  Must be results-oriented, flexible, self-motivated, and have an ability to collaborate with colleagues in a goal-oriented library team.

  Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

  PREFERRED

  Familiarity with educational technology software and hardware.

  Extensive knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  Experience with a variety of user research/usability methods. Experience with web analytics analysis.

  Two or more years experience designing academic library websites.

  Familiarity with graphic design concepts.

  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  Serves as Library Webmaster, including the evaluation, maintenance, and development of the library website to meet the needs of the Fairfield University community. Additionally, supporting website integrations such as LibGuides, ILLiad, Digital Commons@Fairfield, etc. This includes:

  providing vision and direction for all aspects of the Library’s online presence,

  overseeing and curating web content; identifying content needs; creating user-centered, compelling, and accessible content,

  staying current with new interface capabilities, enhancements, industry best practices, and accessible design,

  enhancing user experience and accessibility of library websites,

  using data analytics and conducting usability studies to evaluate the effectiveness and accessibility of current user interfaces and identify opportunities for improvements.

  chairing the Web committee,

  staying abreast of campus IT initiatives,

  serving as primary contact to the University’s Marketing and Communications department on issues related to web design.

  Provides user experience expertise and participates in the development and improvement of technology-based services created in-house for staff and/or patrons. This includes:

  consulting on online instructional materials, e.g. Academic Integrity Tutorials, LibGuides, etc.,

  performing ongoing evaluation and user-testing of user interfaces,

  writing documentation for technology and/or web tools.

  Participates in the investigation, evaluation, and implementation of emerging technologies, products, and services. This includes:

  training/presenting about the use of current and new technologies,

  assessing and implementing new technologies that enhance library services, e.g. virtual reality and AI,

  staying current with trends in technology.

  Performs general technology troubleshooting and oversees the management of all computers and equipment. This includes:

  managing inventory of all staff hardware and library-owned software,

  maintaining documentation for various technologies used in the library,

  evaluating and recommending hardware and software purchases,

  triaging technology issues and providing assistance as needed,

  partners with campus ITS to manage staff and public computers and software,

  performing routine inspection of public-facing Library hardware.

  Assists the Head of Systems in the performance of duties of the Systems team. This includes:

  participating in strategic planning for Library information technology needs,

  helping to determine current and future Library information technology and infrastructure requirements to meet customer information needs,

  assisting in coordinating departmental projects and initiatives,

  serving as system administrator as needed.

  Participates in the growth, development and professional work of the Library. This includes:

  embodying the mission and values of the Library and the University in our everyday work life,

  communicating effectively with supervisor concerning pertinent Library and/or University matters,

  assisting in the discussion and formulation of policies and procedures,

  acting as a responsible participant in staff, committee, and/or task force meetings

  attending and participating in Library and University events,

  monitoring developments in librarianship through attendance at meetings and workshops, membership in professional associations, and the reading of professional literature,

  promoting and communicating the value of the Library to the community.
