  Position Description

  The City of Tacoma is establishing an eligible list for Warehouse Technician. This list will be used to fill vacancies over the next year at all of our warehouses which include locations at Tacoma Public Utilities and Environmental Services.

  A Warehouse Technician performs manual, technical, and record-keeping work involved in the receipt, storage, maintenance and issuance of supplies, materials, and equipment; and updates and maintains a computerized inventory control system. The work requires the ability to manually lift, carry, push or pull heavy parts and equipment. Work also includes picking up materials, supplies, and related parts and equipment from suppliers. Some typing may be required. Subject to emergency callout during off duty hours.

  Qualifications

  Graduation from high school or equivalent

  Two years of warehousing experience including the handling, record keeping and control of a wide variety of parts, materials, supplies and equipment

  LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  Valid Washington State Driver’s License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

  Valid Forklift Operator’s certificate by completion of probation with maintenance thereafter.

  Knowledge & Skills

  Methods, techniques, terminology and procedures used in a warehouse facility for record keeping, inventory control and maintenance.

  Perform basic business math.

  Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

  Perform minor repairs on tools and equipment.

  Safely lift and handle heavy objects up to 75 pounds using proper lifting techniques.

  Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others using tact, patience and courtesy.

  Safely operate a variety of warehousing tools, equipment and machinery.

  Operate a personal computer and assigned application software.

  Interpret computer printout data.

  Understand and follow oral and written directions.

  Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

  Work independently with little direction.

  The City of Tacoma has a technical requirement that employees filling classified roles be residents of the City at the time of their original appointment to a classified job. However, there is a process to request a waiver of this requirement from the Civil Service Board if we identify an outstanding candidate who is a nonresident. Not residing within the City limits of Tacoma is not an automatic disqualifier and everyone is encouraged to apply.

  Interested individuals should complete the online application. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the supplemental questions scored. Applicants must receive a passing score to be placed on the eligible list for interview and hiring consideration.

  Individuals given a conditional offer of employment must pass a pre-employment medical examination that includes a drug screen (including a screen for marijuana) and may be required to pass a background check. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and WSCCCE Local 120. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

  Insurance Plans: Employees are covered by a long-term disability plan. Short-term and expanded long-term disability insurance plans are also available to employees. The State Industrial Insurance Act also covers employees.

  Deferred Compensation: Income can be set aside on a pretax basis and invested for supplementation of normal retirement income.

  Retirement: All employees of the City, except members of the Police and Fire services, Tacoma Rail and certain project employees, are included in the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System.   Other Employment Information

  Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

  Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

  Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
