This position will be with the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) 2+2 program in Canyon, Texas where we will train a subset of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students in the first 2 years of their veterinary degree. The Texas A&M CVMBS is an institution that presents 100 years of growth from a small school of veterinary medicine in 1916 to its present role as a major veterinary educational, medical, and research center. Today, we are one of the largest colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States, training nearly 600 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students each year. What we want
The Veterinary Technician II, under general supervision, is responsible to provide support to veterinarians in the instruction of clinical skills which include, primary patient care, basic surgery, diagnostic techniques and anesthesia with an emphasis on clinical techniques on large animal species (horses, cattle, sheep, goats, swine. Oversees the maintenance of the physical area within the clinical skills and gross anatomy laboratories. Oversees scheduling, handling and compliance for large animal used in teaching.

Other Requirements or Other Factors: This position is located in Canyon, Texas at the WTAMU Campus.
Required Education and Experience:
Associate degree in animal science, veterinary technology, biomedical science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Two years of technical experience in veterinary medicine including animal farming/agriculture, large animal veterinary medicine or related areas.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Large Animal handling.
Working knowledge of manual cattle chute including catching and haltering equine, sheep and cattle.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, and data entry.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two or more years of experience with animal farming/animal agriculture or large animal. Work experience with farm animal handling.
Working knowledge of cattle chute operation (hydraulic).
Loading, unloading, hauling and pulling a trailer.
Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, microscopes, ultrasounds, dental cleaning equipment, ophthalmoscopes, otoscopes, and endoscopic equipment.
Responsibilities:
TEACHING SUPPORT: Provides teaching support to faculty veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of all laboratories. Performs laboratory set up and maintenance of laboratory supplies. Supports faculty with posting materials to the Learning Management System. Prepares, cares for and transports live animals for laboratories. Prepares and maintains models for laboratories. Provides physical restraint for safe handling of farm/large animals. Instructs and coaches students in procedures as directed by faculty. Distributes and cares for cadavers and other teaching specimens. Assists teaching faculty with exam set up. Provides required equipment, materials, specimens, and tools needed for the courses. Provides proper utilization of chemicals used to properly maintain embalmed specimens Assists with the acquisition of acquiring specimens for teaching gross anatomy. Performs laboratory set up as directed by faculty. Assures that laboratory protocols are followed by all participants. Assures that cleanliness and sanitization is maintained. Maintain and operate point of care equipment. Prepare and maintain models for laboratories.
MONITOR AND RECORD DATA: Instructs and assists students in maintaining accurate and complete medical records for live animal laboratories. Ensures that all charges generated from Clinical Skills Laboratory are captured and correctly entered into spreadsheets. Ensures that all controlled substances used in the Clinical Skills Laboratory are properly documented and accounted for. Reviews student records for accuracy and completeness. Instructs students in recording the patient physiological data and all medications given on medical records.
MAINTAIN AND OPERATE EQUIPMENT: Operates cattle chutes in a safe manner. Ensures that the proper equipment is available to facilitate patient and student safety. Ensures that equipment is properly placed and functioning for appropriate laboratories as scheduled. Maintains and operates point of care laboratory equipment. Maintains and operates patient monitoring equipment. Maintain microscopes as assigned. Maintains accountability for inventory control of capital equipment within the service area and assumes responsibility for performing regularly scheduled preventative maintenance checks. Arranges for Clinical Skills Laboratory equipment maintenance when necessary. Provides proper utilization of chemicals used to properly maintain embalmed specimens.
MAINTAIN SKILLS AND WET LABORATORY AREA: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service area. Restocks inventories, and orders supplies, drugs, and solutions. Cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the course. Provides infectious disease control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working environment. Properly cleans and organizes the multipurpose laboratory (including freezer and cooler) based upon cleaning SOPs. Properly cleans and organizes counter tops in multipurpose laboratory and Clinical Skills laboratory. Organizes cleaning of clinical skills, clean vestibule, and dirty vestibule floor with SSC. Sweeps these areas as needed between cleanings by SSC.
TRAINING & COMPLIANCE: Remains up to date with all trainings required by the University, IACUC, and Institutional Biosafety Committee. Works with students to follow IACUC protocols during laboratories and maintain all IACUC records. Assists faculty with maintenance of controlled substances logs and inventory as assigned. Maintains record of animal use as directed by IACUC as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.
