  Position Summary

  The Columbia University School of General Studies (GS) is the finest liberal arts college in the United States dedicated to making Ivy League education accessible to nontraditional students. GS was founded in 1947 on the mission of expanding access to elite higher education, and it remains the most diverse college in the Ivy League, with many transfer, first-generation, and international students. GS students are fully integrated with Columbia's broader undergraduate population and are taught by Columbia's celebrated faculty.

  The variable hours officer will act as editor of The Owl, the annual alumni magazine of the School of General Studies (GS), the University's undergraduate college dedicated to serving nontraditional students. The Owl, which has a circulation of more than 25K and a digital version made available on the GS website, comprises long-form feature stories, alumni profiles, and coverage of current and graduating student activities, all aimed at keeping our audience of alumni, family members, and friends of the School connected to GS and the University. In this role, the variable hours officer will oversee all aspects of production-planning, coordinating, writing, editing, reviewing, and finalizing content; provide project management, art direction, creative management, and supervision of freelance contributors; and work on and/or coordinate related projects as needed.

  Responsibilities

  Coordinates end-to-end delivery of print issue and creation of digital version, overseeing all production work

  Plans, schedules, manages, and leads regular editorial meetings with the vice dean, and members of the communications and alumni relations teams

  Works with members of the Dean's Office, communications and alumni relations, and other offices at Columbia GS and University as needed, to generate ideas for articles, features, profiles, and event coverage

  Will work with Columbia GS alumni, donors, and a range of affiliated persons to manage and coordinate interviews for the writers creating content for the Owl. Acts as a representative of the School in working to generate content and stories through engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders who are featured in The Owl.

  Creates an editorial calendar and set deadlines to ensure appropriate and timely progress and meet target publication date

  Hires, manages, and works closely with freelance writers, photographers, designers, and/or photographers as needed

  Will require project management skills; great attention to detail and accuracy; coordination of staff-related activities for related projects; and, editing, research, writing, and creative direction

  Minimum Qualifications

  Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in experience required. Minimum of four years of related experience required. Bachelor's degree in English or a related field preferred. Higher education experience and knowledge of Columbia University history preferred. The successful candidate must be able to work independently. Requires organizational, analytical, and interpretive skills. Must have a strong understanding of language and grammar, as well as excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work under changing priorities and manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Strong computer skills a must. Experience with MS office, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, Asana (or similar project management software), and desktop publishing software preferred.
