  The mission of Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) (https://police.georgetown.edu/about/) is to protect the Georgetown University community, ensuring a safe and secure learning and living environment through trusting partnerships and professional police services. Our officers are commissioned special police, vested through the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

  Job Overview

  The University Police Officer performs law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, and investigation. They understand access control systems, and circulation and safety systems; effect arrests, and provide emergency response as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders, as directed by superior officers, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Training Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental trainings; and support the University community by providing information and assistance.

  Directly responsible to the Police Sergeant for fulfilling duties assigned, the University Police Officer performs patrol functions and specialized assignments in accordance with all special and general orders in the protection of life and property at Georgetown University. Working independently with general supervision, and cooperatively with other Police Officers, Communication Officers, Security Officers, and Student Guards, the University Police Officer has duties that include but are not note limited to:

  Provide police and security services while protecting life and property, and perform police patrol duties on foot, by motor vehicle, and/or bicycle - to include response to all calls for service, suspicious activities and emergencies

  Enforce all United States, District of Columbia laws and University rules and regulations, and support the university community by establishing and maintaining an environment in which all community members can go safely about their varied activities in the best interest of the university

  Accurately and thoroughly prepare incident reports, safeguard information and evidence to ensure successful follow up and resolution, and initiate preliminary investigations of criminal and traffic incidents

  Conduct traffic enforcement, and provide first responder aid; and when required, support and aid anyone who has been a victim of crime

  Attend court for case review and testimony whenever necessary, regardless of other commitments

  As part of the community-oriented policing program, regularly gather and report intelligence related to public safety and crime prevention, and conduct crime risk analysis within the campus assigned area

  Identify and analyze recurring community problems, work to identify responses to them, and prepare and coordinate tasks to be accomplished within the campus assigned area

  Prepare evaluation reports describing task accomplishment related to community policing goals and objectives, and conducting speaking presentations on topics that have been identified through surveys and analysis without supervision

  In support of the university's higher education objectives, become well acquainted with members of the University community

  In the absence of the Communications Officer, answer all telephone calls and respond to emergencies, burglar alarms, fire alarms, and requests for service

  Monitor all burglar/security alarms, cameras and fire alarms; track University Police activities at dispatch; and perform other duties as assigned

  Qualifications

  High School diploma or equivalency

  Must be a U.S. citizen

  Must be at least 21 years of age

  Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and must be able to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification

  All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing

  Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation

  For Non-Lateral Hires: Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Campus Special Police Officer Commission; and must be able to complete all required university police training, to include certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and OC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint. Training includes successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy within the probation period

  For Lateral Hires: Must have current certification in Baton/OC Spray; must have successfully completed the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent training and certification from a civilian or military law enforcement academy; and should have basic to intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures

  Must be comfortable using computers including Microsoft Word, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications

  Must possess tact, patience, a professional and courteous demeanor in order to deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members

  Must respect the use of police powers in relation to a University environment

  Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing

  Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  Daily requirements to move items up to 20 pounds of weight

  Frequently requirements to move more than 50 pounds of weight and/or walk or stand with operation of controls

  Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing more than 100 pounds of weight

  Essential Designation: The University Police Officer is designated as essential under University guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary - including rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs. Therefore, willingness and availability to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department is required.
