Overview:
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) merged on July 1, 2022, to form one agency, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS, Division of Public Health, is seeking a Tuberculosis (TB) Nurse Clinician to work within the Bureau of Immunization and Tuberculosis. Experience working with TB or TB patients is not required, as training will be provided. If you enjoy helping others and are looking for a new and rewarding challenge, that does not involve direct patient care, this job is for you!
Location and Hours:
This is a full-time opportunity located in Des Moines and will work remotely 2 days a week and from the Lucas Building on the beautiful Capitol Complex, with free parking. Typical hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. After successful completion of the probationary period, if desired, this position could work from 7:30 A.M. -4:00 P.M. with Supervisor approval.
Core Job Duties:
This position is vital to the well-being of those with latent TB infection (LTBI) suspected and confirmed cases of TB disease. You will see the positive impact on those you support and the patients they are treating. No experience with TB is required to be successful in this position. Previous consulting experience in a healthcare setting with healthcare professionals is preferred.
The TB Nurse Clinician will serve as a subject matter expert for tuberculosis (TB) case management and provide consultation services to clinicians, infection preventionists, nurses and local public health agencies.
Answer questions and provide guidance on TB control administration, infection control issues and benefits of partnering with other local agencies (schools, physicians’ offices, etc.).
Offer guidance through monitoring, education and assessing public health nursing TB follow up activities.
Review medical records of persons with suspected or confirmed TB disease and write clinical summations for clinician review.
Utilize practical knowledge of pertinent Iowa public health laws, rules, and regulations regarding TB control when providing consultation to healthcare professionals.
Maintain clinical expertise by regular review of current CDC/ATS/IDSA guidelines and attending relevant trainings.
Coordinate, monitor and receive requests for new and updated prescriptions for TB, LTBI suspected and active TB cases from health care providers.
Evaluates educational needs of healthcare professionals and develop provider specific healthcare professional educational curriculum.
Review submitted data to monitor data quality and identify problem areas to ensure data and reporting integrity.
The ideal candidate will have:
Consulting experience working with nurses, clinicians and local public health agencies.
Strong observational and analytical skills.
Detail orientated.
Professional and prompt communication skills over the phone, through email and in person.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in nursing and experience equal to one year of full-time professional clinical work in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability.
2) All of the following (a and b):
a. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in either a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability; and
b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in nursing equals one year of full-time experience.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch at the Iowa Veterans Home that includes experience equal to five years of full-time work as a Registered Nurse. The Iowa Veterans Home's service/duty requirements are not applicable to other institutions or agencies for qualification purposes.

All positions in this class require licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing, or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
