　　Employment Qualifications

　　Graduate of Surgical Assistant accredited Surgical Assistant program

　　Has applied for licensure in the state of Virginia

　　Requires CPR certification

　　Must be proficient in the command of the English language

　　Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

　　The Surgical Assistant License Applicant in the Operating Room, under the direction of the Operating Room Clinical Leadership Team will be responsible for age specific care, safety, and quality care for patients undergoing surgical intervention based on the standards of care and in accordance with the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the Operating Room. Under the direction of a designated preceptor and or the operating surgeon, the surgical assistant license applicant is responsible for assistance with patient positioning prior to the beginning of the procedure. The extern is also responsible for providing exposure, tying sutures, applying dressings to patients undergoing surgical intervention. The surgical assistant license applicant is also expected to work closely with team members; other responsibilities will include but are not limited to preparing the room for procedures, room turnover, maintaining sterile technique, and restocking as needed. The surgical assistant license applicant’s assignments will be made by the Operating Room Charge Nurse in collaboration with the designated preceptor.

　　Essential Job Functions

　　Responsible for age specific care, safety, and quality of patients undergoing surgical intervention based on standards of care, policies and procedures of the Operating Room.

　　Responsible for patient positioning, providing exposure during the procedure, tying suture, closing the surgical site, dressing application

　　Sets up the operating room with appropriate equipment prior to the procedure

　　Maintains sterile technique

　　Using the physician preference card, works closely with team members to set the room up for the procedure

　　Assists with room turnover
