The Opportunity
Cornellians is a digital publication aiming to experiment, engage, and enliven users' experience. The Staff Writer will bring a storyteller's vision, reportorial curiosity, a conversational tone, and creative energy to this unique online alumni magazine.
The Staff Writer will generate and craft lively stories (multi-source features, profiles, Q&As, trends, issue-oriented pieces, calls to action, multimedia packages, etc.). A successful candidate possesses writerly voice and verve-delivering crisp, clean copy and utilizing rigorous journalistic standards to speak to, and with, diverse readers from every era.The Staff Writer will also build their own story pages on the back end of our website; generate copy for Class Notes as needed; and help organize and execute features based on contributed content from alumni.

Remote/Hybrid: This position may be performed at a remote location of your choice within the United States. While the role is remote, with a hybrid option, the successful candidate will be required to travel to Ithaca, New York approximately twice per month to cover stories and do research on campus, and to attend occasional in-person team meetings and retreats, as well as annual events such as Homecoming and Reunion.
The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working outside New York State.
Compensation: The position will be offered at between $59,115 - $62,000/ annual and will be based on the final candidate's skills and experience.
Key Responsibilities
These include, but are not limited:
Generating story ideas, and report and writing multiple types of editorial content. Working with the Cornellians team and AAD and UR colleagues to develop multimedia assets to support storytelling and audience engagement, and to promote the Cornellians brand.Gathering relevant accurate information from primary and secondary sources to assist with the preparation and presentation of content.Writing and editing content working within the University brand and message framework. Ensuring appropriate style, relevance, comprehensiveness and quality of content; present completed content for approval.Working with the Editor-in-Chief and Cornellians team to plan short-term and long-term production calendar.
What You Need
Bachelor's degree and 2-4 years' full time journalism work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong writing and reporting skills. Sound news judgement, creative initiative, storytelling instinct, and ability to meet deadlines.Familiarity with digital-first publishing. Confidence and curiosity to pursue and write multiple stories simultaneously.Ability to work effectively in a remote setting with small team and campus partners.Ability to travel to the Ithaca, NY, campus twice a month.
Preferred:
Experience with multimedia storytelling and comfort using WordPress. Experience and/or familiarity with unique challenges and opportunities of alumni storytelling and/or higher ed publications. Knowledge of Cornell University.
