Job Description Summary
As Senior Engineer the successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the delivery and application engineering of existing and new electronic applications, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid”.
This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.
The role of Senior Electronic Hardware Engineer has moderate autonomy, requiring high levels of operational judgment. It gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to contribute towards technical strategy and policy development and ensure delivery within their area of responsibility.
Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be some international travels to collaborate with other GE teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers and contract customers.
As a senior engineer it is expected that you will be involved in representing the business externally, through involvement in GE patent applications and technical publications, and through involvement with conferences or professional working bodies (IEC, CIGRE, etc).
The Candidate:
The position requires extensive electronics engineering expertise, a good level of technical understanding and a high level of technical competences of digital, and where possible analogue electronic design for an industrial control system. The candidate will likely be educated to degree level or higher in a related technical subject with a proven track record and evidence that the candidate has the in-depth experience and proven abilities to perform the role.
The candidate should demonstrate an in-depth level of knowledge and understanding of electronic components & principles.
In addition to relevant experience, the candidate should demonstrate an ability to think innovatively and apply engineering knowledge across different disciplines.
It is also expected that applicant should have strong experience in industrialisation and supply chain integration.
An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share the knowledge are essential qualities.
At this level it is expected a high level of personal judgment and the ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters with minimal guidance. Uses prior experience and on-the-job training to solve complex tasks. Has access to technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal and external sources to arrive at decisions.

Chartered Engineer or capable of working towards professional body accreditation (E.G: IEC, CIGRE etc).
Travel worldwide for product validations, product testing, supply chain integration activities, plus attendance to industry conferences and exhibitions.
Have Knowledge and experience of:
The HVDC sector
Digital electronic circuit design and development.
Analogue electronic circuit design and development.
Schematic capture supervision.
PCB layout supervision including rules & constraints.
Electronic component selection, analysis, and qualification testing.
Component level design error testing and analysis.
Firmware code development. (Preferred attribute)
Software code development. (Preferred attribute)
Model based product development tools (MATLAB, Mathcad, LTspice). (Preferred attribute)
Ensure correct and accurate technical documentation is generated consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
Uses technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations.
FPGA component selection.
Industrial networks like Profibus, Ethernet, Passive Optical Networks (PON).
Product verification (bench testing) and validation (integration testing) testing.
Type testing - EMC, Environmental, Halt.
Electronic design for EMC.
PCB interactions within power electronics systems.
Design for manufacture (DFM), test (DFT), industrialisation & design to cost.
Practical electronic bench testing experience.
Maintaining legacy products including updates and improvements to extend product life span.
A competent level of specification & technical report writing acumen.
Understanding of latest technical developments in discipline. Guided by external professional practices and policies to identify, develop, evaluate and introduce engineering solutions into deign discipline to meet near term and long-range engineering needs.
