Description
Are you passionate about pushing the limits of space technology for national security applications?
Do you enjoy full-stack system design, from high-level architecture, to detailed HW/SW design, to hands-on integration and testing in lab?
If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team!
APL spacecraft fulfill the nation's most challenging national security and civilian missions, with electrical systems that straddle multiple disciplines, including command and data handling, interfaces, power distribution, timekeeping and synchronization, EMI/EMC, fault management, onboard data processing and autonomy, and machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. APL is seeking a Spacecraft Electrical Systems Engineer to lead the design of advanced spacecraft electrical systems on increasingly fast-paced, risk-tolerant missions.
As a Spacecraft Electrical Systems Engineer, you will work collaboratively with mission system engineers, electronics engineers, flight software engineers, mechanical & thermal engineers, guidance & control engineers, and program managers to architect complex electrical spacecraft and payloads. You will guide the design by drafting requirements and interface control documents, assessing and evaluating subsystem trades, providing program management with technical inputs, participating in detailed design discussions, and demonstrating prototype hardware in lab. You will stay up-to-date with the latest offerings in the new space marketplace for processors, networks, sensors, and memory so that you can leverage the best commercial options for completing the mission. As a member of a dynamic integrated team, you will support all phases of development, from early architecture through detailed implementation to integration and test (I&T) and flight support.
your primary responsibilities will be:
Your primary responsibility will be to lead spacecraft electrical architecture design, analysis and prototyping, including definition of subsystem requirements (e.g., processor and memory bandwidth requirements, power allocation, and instrument/sensor interfaces). Allocate and derive detailed requirements from operational and fault management concepts.Participate in subsystem detailed engineering design reviews as a key project reviewer.Provide electrical engineering oversight of non-electrical disciplines for electrical interfaces and performance.Generate electrical system documentation including requirements, interface control documents, and test procedures.Present the electrical system architecture at program-level design reviews. Support integration and test of FlatSat prototypesParticipate in proposal and advanced concept development activities. Lead and mentor staff in execution of Electrical Systems responsibilities.Participate in internal professional service (e.g. committees) and external professional service (e.g. technical conferences) activities.Qualifications
You will meet our minimum requirements if you have...
Possess a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field.Have at least 5 years of professional experience with aerospace electrical systems engineering.Have hands-on experience in the design, development, and test of flight electronic hardware.Have excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.Currently hold a secret level clearance and are ultimately able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at APL, has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. This includes historic, science space firsts like New Horizons reaching Pluto, Parker Solar Probe being the first to "touch" the sun, and the DART mission that redirected an asteroid for planetary defense. As a not-for-profit university affiliated research center, APL also delivered solutions to our nation's national security challenges, as proven with the recent Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) Tech Demo, and acts as a trusted partner with the US Space Force in space domain awareness and space-integrated warfare.
APL teams are currently developing missions that will advance the search for life in the Solar System through programs such as Europa Clipper and Dragonfly, exploring the lunar and cislunar domains, and providing fundamental knowledge of our Sun's influence on the near-Earth environment through IMAP and other research and technology endeavors.
