Job Description
Your Team
The Compliance function is designed to help management and the Board of Directors determine whether risk management, internal controls, and governance processes, as designed and represented by management, are adequate and functioning in an efficient and effective manner.
Reporting to the Manager, Compliance, the SOX Compliance Analyst will be responsible for ensuring Brookfield Properties’ development group and Brookfield Residential Properties ULC have effective risk management and governance by assessing internal control policies, programs, and procedures, thereby contributing to the achievement of financial and operational goals.
Your Key Deliverables
Execute the annual SOX Compliance program including determining materiality, planning, performing a detailed risk assessment, and determining audit scope and objectives
Collaborate with key contacts at multiple business groups to assist with updating SOX Compliance narratives
Work closely with external auditors, Brookfield Corporation, Brookfield Properties Group, business process owners, and other key stakeholders to coordinate efficient and effective execution of audit plan; which includes the scheduling of control walkthroughs, testing, and follow-up on remediation plans for identified control deficiencies
Ensure integrated approach exists for the identification and testing of automated controls, as well as the evaluation of information used by the control owner when performing the control
Understanding of IT General Controls (ITGCs) as well as impact of ITGCs deficiencies if any
Execute testing, assess, and report on control design and operating effectiveness as well as assess and report on identified deficiencies
Provide value-added recommendations to assist management in identifying areas of improvement
Prepare and/or assist with documenting audit findings and recommendations through written memos to multiple stakeholders
Monitor, validate and report on the implementation status of management action plans resulting from audit findings
Identify high risk areas and provide value-added business advice, while considering alternatives and following through on recommended solutions
Embrace new technologies and processes within the organization and assess the impact
Coordinate the review of company processes, policies and programs; which includes discussions with stakeholders, performance of testing, review of controls and risk mitigation practices, completion of file documentation, and report writing to stakeholder
Assist with the execution of company-wide training and recertification over core governance policies and programs as well as assist with overall governance related matters
Perform quarter-end reporting requirements including compiling and analyzing quarterly checklists
Must Haves
Bachelor’s Degree or College Diploma in Business or related field (preferred)
Possession or near completion of a professional designation (CPA) (preferred)
Accounting firm experience with SOX clients considered an asset
A minimum of 3-5 years business experience, with experience in auditing or accounting roles
Knowledge of IIA Standards, risk-based methodologies and data analysis techniques
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Authorized to work and travel as required in Canada and the US (10% travel)
Ability to work independently with general supervision and collaboratively in a team environment with multiple stakeholders
Capable of managing multiple projects and priorities concurrently, and seeing projects through from start to finish
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills
A high degree of maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive information
The ability to exercise sound judgment and possess problem solving skills solved by drawing upon prior experiences
Must be well organized, have the ability to multi-task and prioritize various projects
Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
Must have keenness to drive and manage necessary changes for the company
