POSITION PURPOSE
The Office of Research Information Services (ORIS) has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Web Analyst (Senior Computer Specialist (E S 9)). The Sr. Web Analyst contributes to the UW’s Office of Research website (www.washington.edu/research), as well as associated websites and web applications. The UW’s research community on all three campuses utilizes this high-profile collection of WordPress sites and applications to access mission-critical information and conduct their work. The site is also an important vehicle for communicating about the research enterprise to the UW community, sponsors, peer institutions and the general public.
The Sr. Web Analyst is a member of a web team that includes support from a web developer, product owner, communication specialist, instructional designer, project manager, infrastructure engineer and others in ORIS as needed. This web team is part of the Office of Research Information Services, which develops and delivers software solutions to the research community.
The role involves using analysis techniques and knowledge of the website application ecosystems to work with stakeholders, gather and document requirements, work with developers to implement solutions, and assure acceptance of new solutions. Successful candidates must possess independent judgment in prioritizing critical information, and discretion and diplomacy in working within the larger UW administrative environment. The role is responsible for content platform administration, including configuring website components, and technical analysis related to areas such as site security, vendor products, infrastructure, and analytics. This position requires close collaboration with the web developer(s) and experience with content management systems, particularly WordPress, as well as familiarity with software release processes and software development best practices.

Technical scope requires knowledge of standard software development processes, including use case, user story and acceptance test case development, requirements management, work breakdown, release processes, quality assurance processes, systems analysis and documentation. The scope of tasks to be performed or managed spans all project phases including design, development, programming, implementation, operations, maintenance, communication, training, and support.
Content platform administration encompasses configuring WordPress and plugins, including widgets, menus, pages/posts, modules, etc.; test and troubleshooting; managing access to WordPress and other applications; managing analytics, including configuring and running reports, among other responsibilities.
Successful candidates must interface productively with business-oriented clients, including university leadership, system end-users, including campus users and the general public, and a technically oriented project team, including developers and infrastructure engineers. The person in this role must have strong business relationship skills and the flexibility to take on broader responsibilities when necessary. Project management skills are also helpful.
This position is a key point of contact for customers, partners, and other members of the project team. It plays a pivotal role in the success of projects via relationships with our partners, identification of the partner needs, and technical implementation and ensuring that approaches and solutions are linked to objectives and future needs. Consensus must be negotiated and developed within a complex, distributed governance structure.
This role is critical to maintaining access to high-value information and resources researchers and research teams use to do their work every day and contributes to furthering the Office of Research’s mission of accelerating research at the University of Washington. This role is an essential team member in developing and implementing a new technical and visual design for the website intended to “tell the research story” of the UW to a broader audience, including industry partners, sponsors, peers, prospective students and employees and the general public, and as such has an impact on the university’s ability to attract talent and funding to support the $1.9B research enterprise.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Technical Analysis
Research and analyze end-user needs using user-centered design practices, and various elicitation techniques, to include structured interviews, surveys, site visits, focus groups.
Apply systems analysis techniques and procedures, including consulting with users, to determine hardware, software, or system functional specifications.
Design, develop, document, analyze, create, test, and modify computer systems or programs, including prototypes based on and related to user or system design specifications.
Use agile methodologies to break complex feature requirements into manageable chunks of work that deliver value to the end user.
Create artifacts as needed to support clear understanding of business and technical needs, to include business process diagrams, use cases, scenarios, task and workflow analysis, and working prototypes.
Facilitate discussions with stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop shared understanding of needs and build consensus related to priorities and requirements and develop inclusive solutions that thoughtfully balance trade-offs and benefits among process partners.
Document functional requirements, user interaction requirements, non-functional requirements, specifications, and acceptance criteria to support software development, quality assurance, support and learning materials, and other downstream development support processes.
Contribute to testing new features and updates.
Critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose or abstract up as needed.
Perform security analysis tasks to inform design decisions and support selection of vendor products.
Design and facilitate requirements workshops, user research sessions, and collaborative design sessions, as needed.
Write user stories; create and manage Jira cards to facilitate work handoff to developers.
Test and lead UAT activities to ensure features are developed to specifications and function as expected.
Develop, maintain, and evaluate technical documentation.Website Administration
Configure WordPress, WordPress plugins and other capabilities added to WordPress (e.g. widgets, menus, pages/posts, modules, etc.).
Test and troubleshoot.
Manage access to WordPress and other applications.
Develop and provide web editor training and documentation materials.
Manage analytics, including configuring and running reports and evaluating analytics program for conformance with data privacy requirements.
Support editors who are authoring, coordinating, managing and migrating content.
Perform light-weight design and develop prototypes, such as page layout using WordPress and UW Theme components, organizing menus using stock components, assisting editors in appropriately applying UW Theme and using components as intended.
Ensure site meets AA WCAG Web Accessibility standards.
Ensure site meets security standards set by ORIS and maintain necessary documentation to support security reviews and audits.
Stay current and inform the team on new developments in WordPress and WordPress best practices.
Triage web-based production support issues.
Serve as backup to Web Developer to troubleshoot production support issues and assist with monitoring system performance and responding to any outages.
Manage intake or customer change requests using ticket tracking system, responding based on severity and priority of requests.Lead and Communication Responsibilities
Establish and foster good working relationships with business partners, stakeholder groups, and fellow team members by providing ongoing communication and check-ins throughout the design and development phases to ensure products are adequately meeting the business need.
Meet regularly with internal and external stakeholders to schedule projects based on prioritization from managers.
Work collaboratively with ORIS staff and business partners to create effective communication and develop common goals.
Serve as advocate and adviser to business units, helping them better clarify and articulate business needs, within the context of the broader product strategy and vision.
Lead, organize and influence positively and effectively, working through unstructured problems and creating the structure necessary to drive for results.
Serve as backup/proxy for product owner; provide leadership and decision making for the team when product owner is unavailable or has delegated authority.
Represent product owner in stakeholder meetings when product owner is unavailable or has delegated authority.
Lead day-to-day tasks of other team-members, as assigned (e.g. communications specialist, tester, etc.).
Work with product owner and project manager on website strategy, planning and roadmap exercises. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Science, English, Communications, Digital Media or other related area.
Minimum 5 years of experience performing progressively more complex analysis and website administration tasks, including in the following areas:- performing business and technical analysis, including engaging with stakeholders- participating as a team member in progressively more complex technology projects and communicating on a regular basis with developers and other technical staff about the work product- managing and/or administering a content management platform, preferably WordPress-based
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrated knowledge of content management system and/or website and web application management, website platforms and web infrastructure, including WordPress.
Demonstrated proficiency in technical and business analysis. Solid working knowledge of business and technical analysis tools and techniques used for requirements elicitation, analysis, documentation, modeling, and validation; demonstrated diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team in a cooperative effort.
Strong customer focus; ability to manage stakeholder expectations and establish a high level of trust and confidence, develop consensus across organizational lines, resolve conflict and facilitate groups.
Excellent skills in written and verbal communication.
Self-Motivated to learn new technologies quickly and stay up to date on relevant software products and trends. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with learning management systems or learning record stores.
Website information architecture experience.
HTML, CSS or JavaScript experience.
Experience with accessibility best practices.
Experience or training in user experience design.
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and photo editing.
Experience working in a higher education and/or a consensus driven environment.
Knowledge of project management methodologies and best practices, including Agile, kanban and SCRUM, and activities such as work breakdown, project planning, resource management, consensus building, and process improvement.
Experience with Jira software.
Business Certification Program (BACP).
Knowledge of AWS or other cloud-based hosting solutions.
Master’s degree in relevant field.This position contributes to a collaborative teamwork environment. Collaboration among the software developers, website team members, business analysts, project managers, editors, quality assurance, support and others is done in a shared space working environment through ad hoc meetings focused on problem-solving, and the use of synchronous and asynchronous communication tools. Inflexible deadlines are common and non-standard working hours can be necessary. This position will primarily be expected to work standard working hours, aligned with Pacific Time zone where the office is based, with some monitoring and support responsibilities outside of standard working hours. Project go-lives will also necessitate work outside standard hours.
