  Job Description Summary

  The HF/UX + FEI (Human Factors/User Experience + Front End Innovation) Team works within the Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) business unit. The role of HF+UX within this business is to bring knowledge and expertise in user-centered design that begins with the initiation of programs and transitions into design and development.

  This individual contributor role will be responsible for utilizing evidence-based tools and principles to design systems and products that match the user’s needs and environment. They align research, design, and business strategies by working with project teams and business leadership to drive user-centered product development, which is proven to reduce risks, minimize development costs, and maximize market acceptance of products.

  Responsibilities

  HF+UX engineers will have the opportunity engage in numerous MDS product development programs across the business unit. This is a hybrid, on-site role (in office 3 days per week) in either Salt Lake City/Sandy, UT, or Franklin Lakes, NJ.

  The engineer will engage in product design work and independent review, including the following:

  Provide human factors, user experience, and design validation support to R&D teams throughout the product development cycle.

  Work with cross functional core teams to ensure human factors and usability strategies are appropriately scaled to each program.

  Perform observational research methods such as contextual inquiry and ethnography as part of Front-End Innovation and Concept Teams to distill customer insights and unmet needs as part of the BioDesign® process.

  Conduct other forms of generative reach including but not limited to competitive usability assessment, subject matter expert (SME) and key opinion leader (KOL) interviews, focus groups, and surveys. Ability to facilitate/moderate studies with clinical professionals.

  Distill research insights into user needs and themes through the process of affinitization or KJ Analysis to ensure traceability.

  Drive deep understanding of the human-system interface through the creation of user profiles, environmental characterization, workflow mapping, task analysis, functional modeling, and use cases / scenarios.

  Use anthropometry, biomechanics, and human capability data to support, analyze, and optimization system design and ergonomics.

  Design and develop user interfaces which include but are not limited to devices, software, packaging, instructions, and training.

  Apply low to high fidelity prototyping methods to enable quick turn customer centric design loops that power Agile processes and decision making.

  Participate in teams to develop and iterate upon user needs and requirements.

  Evaluate Use Error as part of use-related risk analysis (URRA) and mitigation efforts in partnership with Medical Affairs.

  Conduct product evaluations, brainstorming sessions, competitive analysis, and other usability engineering methodologies with both internal teams and external vendors.

  Design, plan, implement, analyze, and report using qualitative and quantitative research as part of formative study evaluation which may include but are not limited to heuristic evaluation, authority review, and simulated use studies.

  As a Support external vendors and business group Verification & Validation (V&V) teams in Design Validation which includes Summative HF Validation Testing.

  Partner with Regulatory Affairs to ensure HF Validation and Design Validation activities are detailed and accurately retire risk for new-to-market products and adheres to applicable quality systems

  Partner with Medical Affairs to help support clinical evidence generation activities as they pertain to human factors and usability

  In addition to program responsibilities, HF+UX engineers will also work support efforts to educate and improve Human-Centered Design (HCD) throughout the R&D community. They will accomplish this by doing work that exemplifies standard methodologies, mentoring other specialists on project teams, participating in and holding training/workshops, and providing constructive challenge to internal and external teams as independent reviewers and advocates customer and end-user.

  A key characteristic of an associate in this role is an all-in, get-your-hands-dirty mindset. The associate should be able to figure out how to prototype a concept quickly, in sometimes non-traditional ways, to get a quick reaction or test feasibility with end users to enable Agile development. A level of comfort in a wood, metal, or machine shop, and the ability to piece components together in a lab is strongly desired. This is not a sit-at-your desk, someone else makes the parts job – it is very practical and vital to spur innovation in the MDS business.

  Skills

  Required

  Deep experience crafting, executing, and analyzing usability studies (i.e. generative research, formatives, summative & post-market) in the medical device/pharma industry

  Ability to translate HF+UX findings into user-needs/requirements, user risk, and/or design solutions related to the human-system interface

  Preferred

  Highly motivated self-starter able to achieve results with minimal oversight

  Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present complex ideas to multiple levels

  Strong creative, analytical and problem-solving skills

  Strong technical judgement, leadership, and social skills

  Strong facilitation and analytic skills with an open mind

  Sound knowledge of engineering first principles

  Understanding of the End-to-End Product Development Process

  Experience

  5-7+ years of experience conducting user research within medical devices/pharma

  BS or MS in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Information Science, Biomedical or Mechanical engineering, Industrial Design, System Engineering or equivalent.

  Up to 25% travel may be required
