About Senior Electrical Engineer

  Description

The Space Science Electronics group at APL builds instruments and electronics systems for space flight that produce data for scientific research. We are looking for an engineer to lead teams of engineers to perform specification, design, analysis, fabrication and qualification of custom electronics systems for space flight instrumentation. We're a group of about 40 engineers with expertise that span across all aspects of instrument production including systems engineering, electronics design, FPGA design, and software design. We work very closely with other groups of engineers and scientists who contribute all other expertise required for the instrument production.

Some examples of our work include: the PEPSSI and LORRI instruments on the New Horizons Spacecraft, most of the instrument suite on the MESSENGER Spacecraft, the CRISM instrument on the MRO Spacecraft, and dozens more. We recently delivered instruments for the JUICE, Europa Clipper, Psyche, and Lucy missions. We are currently working on instruments for the MMX, IMAP and Dragonfly missions, among others. We are seeking talented individuals to contribute to the design and production of space flight instrumentation.

In this role, your primary responsibility will be:

  1. Organize the efforts of a cross disciplinary team including engineers with backgrounds that include analog, digital, and power supply electronics, sensors, FPGA, software, mechanical, thermal, structural, testbeds, materials, EEE parts, EMI/EMC, and radiation.

  2. Work with scientists and engineers from the instrument and spacecraft teams to design and document the architecture, requirements, interfaces, integration, qualification, and verification for instrument electronics systems.

  3. Execute the design, fabrication, integration, test, and qualification of printed circuit board assemblies with FPGAs and software systems in support of space flight instrumentation.

  4. Perform technical mentoring, progress tracking and reporting, and host design reviews.

  5. Support instrument and spacecraft level design reviews, integration, and testing.

  Qualifications

  Required Qualifications:

  - B.S. in electrical engineering or closely related field.

  - 7 years of hands-on hardware design and development experience in analog or digital electronics, FPGAs, or software systems.

  - Experience leading teams of engineers to produce electronics systems.

  - Knowledge of electronics, sensors, FPGA, software, mechanical, thermal, structural, testbeds, materials, EEE parts, EMI/EMC, and radiation.

  - Are eligible to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship

  Desired Qualifications:

  - MSEE or equivalent with a minimum of 10 years of experience in circuit design and 5 years of team leadership.

  - Space-qualified electronics design experience (part selection, derating, worst case analysis).

  - Leadership and organizational capabilities.

  - Relevant space flight hardware experience.

  - Instrument electronics design experience.

  - Good verbal and written communication skills.

  - Capable of working independently and mentoring early career engineers.

  Be Part of Something Innovative

Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at APL, has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. This includes historic, science space firsts like New Horizons reaching Pluto, Parker Solar Probe being the first to "touch" the sun, and the DART mission that redirected an asteroid for planetary defense. As a not-for-profit university affiliated research center, APL also delivered solutions to our nation's national security challenges, as proven with the recent Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) Tech Demo, and acts as a trusted partner with the US Space Force in space domain awareness and space-integrated warfare.

APL teams are currently developing missions that will advance the search for life in the Solar System through programs such as Europa Clipper and Dragonfly, exploring the lunar and cislunar domains, and providing fundamental knowledge of our Sun's influence on the near-Earth environment through IMAP and other research and technology endeavors.
