About Security Assistant

  Summary The incumbent performs work related to the collection, organization, and/or tracking of information in support of the security and enforcement programs. Receives and compiles information from various sources related to police and emergency incidents, takes appropriate action regarding fire, intrusion, and duress alarms, and directs patrol responses and/or notifies responsible personnel depending on the type of incident or request. The incumbent operates a wide variety of communication systems. Responsibilities Provides immediate and courteous assistance to customers, employees, visitors, and/or patients Compiles and prepares documents, reports, and other communications for all levels of management Collects, organizes, and/or tracks information in support of security and/or enforcement programs Work Schedule: 8am to 4pm. Time-In-Grade Requirement: There is no time in grade requirement for a GS-05 position. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: 1) Operates a wide variety of communication systems. 2) Operates and responds to security systems such as alarms, video surveillance, radio communications, and control points. 3) Maintains security of information contained in computerized systems in accordance with federal, state, and/or local laws. OR Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have bachelors degree in a related field. OR Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond two years of collegiate education. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Communications Computer Skills Interpersonal Skills Technical Competence Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with long periods of sitting at a desk, working with computers daily. Some work may require walking in offices and similar areas for meetings. Work may also require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite. The work does not require any special physical effort. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
