About School Based Intervention Counselor

  A School Based Intervention Counselor is directly responsible to the Director of Children & Family Services, and provides services for both regular and special education students. The position goal is to meet the mental health needs of children and allow for greater access to mental health referral and treatment programs. A School Based Intervention Counselor will provide counseling, crisis intervention and referral services to the assigned school district. Support is provided to the families and the school staff.Required Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Human Services as deemed appropriate by the Program Manager (agency) and Director of Pupil Services (school).Minimum of 1 year of school counseling or teaching experience.One year experience in a behavioral health setting is preferred.Experience facilitating adolescent groups and/or counseling adolescentsMust have knowledge of the human service provider’s structure and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with other professionals.Extensive knowledge of ethics, confidentiality and child welfare is required.Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google and familiar with electronic health recordsWillingness to learn and follow Agency’s standards of practiceAbility to successfully pass the Medicaid exclusion screening and background checkDemonstrable ability to connect with and provide support to a diverse client populationKnowledge of local community based services, systems and supports available to children and families.Must have valid NYS driver’s license with clean driving recordSkills and AbilitiesDocumentation skills, time management, organizational skills, independent decision making, listening, verbal communication, building relationships, discretionPosition Type and Expected Hours of WorkThis is a full-time position that primarily follows the assigned district schedule. Expected work hours are 40 hours per week, with a 5-day per week work schedule during the school year (Sept-June).In addition to regular duties attendance is expected at the following formats:Quarterly agency clinical training.Bi-weekly individual or group supervisionOther trainings as assigned, may occur during school breaksEssential FunctionsAdvises and counsels students regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems.Provide individual and/or group counseling to identified students as decided by school personnelRemains universally accessible and makes an effort to know every student for whom they are responsible.Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families.Provides guidance counseling to students through planned activities in small group or classroom settings to convey educational, social, mental health and important school information.Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents, providing feedback and recommendations on appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s emotional, educational needs and abilities.Utilize a proactive, strengths based, team approach in daily interactions with students, their families and school personnel.Develop activities specific to the student’s needs and strengths.Assist in the development of Behavioral Intervention Plans and Functional Behavioral Assessments for students as needed.Identifies students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinates with behavioral health specialists.Provide students and their family with referral and linkage to other school and community based services, when needed.Mentor students in appropriate social skills for classroom use and for public settings in the community.Assists students/parents in understanding school policies and procedures.Provides brief counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately refers students to behavioral health specialists.Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing and implementing student supports.Supports and attends appropriate school activities and events.Maintain documentation as required in a timely and expedient mannerParticipate as agency representative as needed or requested.Maintain the highest ethical standards of human service professionals regarding respect for the individual and confidentiality.Attend regularly scheduled supervision and other Agency meetings as directed.Participate in staff development activities to support professional growth and development.TravelMinimal travel required within the assigned school district and for educational development when necessary. Also travel when necessary to Agency office in Gloversville, NY upon request for meetings, employee development etc.

  Minimum Salary: 16Maximum Salary: 16Salary Unit: Hourly
