The Self-Learning Networks team is looking at the future of network automation as fixed and mobile networks converge. Machine-learning and AI technologies will be key to delivering the benefits of network convergence while managing the cost of deployment, operations and optimisation.
This is a technical professional role in Applied Research where the individual will contribute to one or more research projects under supervision, applying their expertise within a clearly defined sphere of technical knowledge. The role holder actively engages with colleagues and external partners to progress new research in important technical topics and supports the realisation of business value from research and innovation outputs.
The Applied Research Specialist executes a range of workstreams in delivery complex research initiatives that contribute to the development of next-generation systems and innovation capabilities.
What you’ll be doing
• Technical Expert responsible for conducting research into Machine Learning applications for the Open RAN RIC
• Contributing to novel work or clear technical recommendations leading to new solutions to business challenges and opportunities in areas supporting BT’s strategic priorities, or in new fields with potential impact on BT’s future business.
• Maintaining awareness of advances in their field.
• Preparing reports and presentations to customers and collaborative partners
• Contributing to journal publications, popular science articles etc. which contribute to BT’s world-class standing in telecommunications and ICT research.
• Contributing to the creation of intellectual property rights which will enhance BT’s competitive position
• Working with academia, including supervising PhD students
Skills and Experience
• Data Science / Machine learning / Modelling: A scientific, mathematical or engineering background with experience in big data, machine learning and/or modelling.
• Programming: Strong software development skills using languages such as Python, R & C++.
• Technical domain expert: Technical or domain expertise in RAN Optimisation, or Reinforcement Learning.
• Qualifications: Strong academic record in technology specialism, qualified to degree level and may hold a post-graduate qualification
• Expert communicator: Presents to peers and managers about their research and area of technical expertise
• Experienced in open innovation: Contributes to creation of patents, technical publications, conference presentations etc.
• Concept Evaluation: ability to spot relevant innovations, horizon scanning, determine relevance for the business, develop an effective conceptualisation and build trials to test the concept
Experience you’d be expected to have
• Technical domain expert: evidence of good knowledge and skill in the specific technical domain (RAN / Open RAN / RIC / Reinforcement Learning) (MANDATORY)
• Significant delivery: evidence of business impact through contribution to delivery of research (MANDATORY)
• Stakeholder management: evidence of managing project tasks within local team. (MANDATORY)
• Innovative Thinker: ability to spot and identify new innovations and act to bring them in and capitalise and create value (MANDATORY)
• Commercial Applicability: understanding the business opportunity and potential value around relevant innovations (MANDATORY)
