  JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development is seeking a highly motivated and versatile Research Project Manager . Reporting to the Director of the Human Performance Science program, the successful candidate will assist in the development and administration of an active applied research in Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) and other settings where human performance is a priority. The Penn State Human Performance Science program is supported by the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) Departments of Kinesiology, Nutritional Sciences, and Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management, as well as Penn State ICA.

This position will assist in the development and implementation of applied human performance science research involving collaborations between faculty at the College and, initially, practicing human performance specialists at PSU’s Intercollegiate Athletics (coaches, trainers and performance staff). As such, this role requires strong teamwork skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work across disciplines and the desire to innovate in the area of Human Performance Science by working in a systems approach to human performance. The College is launching a Human Performance Science Masters of Professional Studies (MPS) Degree Program with students in the program expected to gain applied research experience. Consequently, research programs coordinated through this position will typically engage MPS students. To facilitate the building of the program, the workload for this position is expected to evolve over time in order to develop this new and exciting program and to work closely with ICA on research priorities.

  Education and Experience Requirements:

Typically requires a Master’s Degree or higher in kinesiology, exercise science, nutrition, exercise physiology, psychology, sports medicine, or a closely related field, plus two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience coordinating applied research with athletes and other performance-based populations.

Experience supporting the design and development of research protocols.

Experience implementing research protocols and monitoring and reporting on study progress.

  Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

Credentials as disciplinarily appropriate (e.g., RDN, Earned and current Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), National Strength and Condition Association, (NSCA), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Exercise Physiology).

  Experience working with research databases.

Experience working with students or trainees in research settings.

The College of Health and Human Development seeks applicants whose professional preparedness, experience, and accomplishments are informed by experiences working with and within groups historically underrepresented in higher education in the United States. Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate, through prior actions and achievements, intentional and actioned commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Examples of such contributions are research or creative activity focused on empowering underserved populations; teaching, mentorship, and service that increases equitable access; and inclusion in fields where historically excluded populations are underrepresented.

  Application Instructions:

  A complete application must include:

A cover letter that outlines the applicant’s research interests and experience in performance science, highlighting in particular any experience with student athlete populations.

A statement of how the applicant can contribute to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment.

  A complete resume.

Names and contact information for three references who are familiar with your research experience.

  Additional Information:

This is a limited-term staff position, funded for one year from the date of hire, with an excellent possibility of renewal.
