The Division of Epidemiology and Community Health, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, seeks one 0.5 FTE (20 hours per week) Research Cardiac Sonographer to perform quality cardiac-related ultrasound scans on research participants for the Atherosclerosis Risks In Communities (ARIC) Study. The ARIC Study is a population-based prospective cohort study that, in 1987-1989, recruited 16,000 participants who have been followed continuously to better understand risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The participants are currently aged 80 years of age or older. The individual in this position will assist with research participant scheduling, clerical and image processing functions, and other clinical tasks as appropriate to support the ARIC clinic team. Data collection is in-person, at the Epidemiology Clinical Research Center (ECRC) and in participant homes. Job Duties & Responsibilities 5% Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensures that it is properly supplied for procedures. Checks equipment and accessories to ensure proper working order and notifies appropriate personnel for repairs. Responds to inquiries/calls regarding procedures in a timely manner. Communicates problems with equipment or scheduled exams with appropriate staff. Assists with scheduling and coordinating exams as appropriate to ensure smooth workflow. Performs quality control on assigned equipment and reports issues in a timely manner. 15% Verifies the participant's identification based on study ID. Communicates with participants clearly and in a professional manner. Ensures proper participant preparation, verifies screening protocols, and answers questions. Assist patient in dressing for exam and attends to participant's physical well-being while transporting to and from exam room and table, and positioning for exam. Instructs/communicates with participant regarding the study to be performed and assesses the patient's ability to tolerate exam. 50% Performs high quality echocardiographic examinations according to the ARIC study protocol in a timely manner. Ensures that images and records are properly completed with patient identification data and appropriate labeling. Utilizes technical knowledge and skills to perform procedures accurately and in a timely manner. Completes image documentation and transfers to reading center in a timely manner. Discusses any relevant clinical findings with the supervising physician. 5% Participates in the modality specific QA/QC program and ensures compliance with policies and protocols. Follows all IRB approved research protocols as written. 25% Cross-training in other clinic duties as needed, such as administering consents and interviews, logging medications, performing seated blood pressures, anthropometry and tests of physical function, and/or supporting participant wearable technology data collection measures (e.g., Fitbits, sleep monitoring devices). Working Conditions This position requires contact with research subjects, study staff, investigators, and other personnel at th ECRC. This position may require moving, lifting, and transferring of research subjects. This appointment is anticipated to begin either in December 2023 or January 2024. Compensation Hourly Rate: $50.00/hour Qualifications All required qualifications must be included in the application materials Required: BA/BS degree or a combination of related education and experience equal to four years Experience in Ultrasound Technology or a Graduate of Accredited Sonography Program. American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) credentialed as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or equivalent. As an alternative, documentation of sufficient formal training and/or equivalent on-the-job training. Proficiency in the performance of a standard and research complete adult clinical echocardiogram, including the acquisition of high quality 2-dimensional, color Doppler, spectral Doppler, tissue Doppler, and 3-dimensional images. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn data entry software Strong organizational skills Willingness to travel off-site to conduct home visits Preferred: BA/BS degree preferred At least two (2) years' experience in cardiac ultrasonography/echocardiography Familiarity of Philips equipment Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with physicians, staff, and other clinic personnel regarding participant care Experience working with older adults (70+ years old) or individuals with various medical conditions Ability to maintain a positive, effective working relationship with staff Ability to use sound judgment in decision-making Are you excited about this job and meet the required qualifications, but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every preferred qualification?
