　　The Department of Oceanography in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU) is part of an alliance of Ocean Sciences at Texas A&M that spans the Marine Biology and Marine Sciences Departments at TAMU Galveston, Geochemical and Environmental Research Group. This alliance of Ocean Sciences represents a truly unique concentration of educational and research resources. Our educational and research capacity is greatly enhanced by close ties to the College Departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Geography, and Geology & Geophysics, as well as the Berg Hughes Center, and Texas Center for Climate Studies.

　　What We Want

　　The Research Assistant will be responsible for examining the pathways of water parcels through the tropical Atlantic. Analysis will involve writing python code and examining the statistics of the flow from both Lagrangian and Eulerian perspectives. Machine learning algorithms may be applied to classify the different pathways taken by water parcels. This position is temporary and with an expected duration of nine months but may be extended if additional funding becomes available. 　　What You Need to Know

　　Starting Salary: $2250 per month

　　Required Education and Experience:

　　Appropriate bachelor’s or equivalent combination of education and experiencePreferred Education and Experience:

　　Bachelor’s degree in physics, either completed or all required in-class work completed

　　Prior experience and confidence with using Scipy, NumPy and Pandas

　　Ability to solve differential equations

　　Understanding of phase/critical transitions

　　Ability to take gradient, divergence, and curl of a vector field

　　Understanding of machine learning methods

　　Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

　　Ability to write python code and write project reports in LaTeX

　　Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position

　　Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment

　　Responsibilities:

　　Ocean Data Analysis: Examines pathways of water parcels through the tropical Atlantic. Utilizes python, writes code in the performance of ocean data analysis. Examines the statistics of the flow from both Lagrangian and Eulerian perspectives. Employs machine learning algorithms as needed to classify the different pathways taken by water parcels.

　　Analysis Results: Assists with preparing and writing reports. Evaluates, summarizes, and communicates analysis results. Assists with presentations to communicate the results of analysis.

　　Research and Reporting: Assists with reading existing literature and reporting discoveries from literature and performs other duties as assigned.
