Description of Work Unit

This position reports to the Critical Care Unit technician manager.
Position Summary
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
The CSU VTH exists to provide exceptional veterinary care and service to the community while educating the next generation of veterinarians at a tertiary level teaching hospital. Critical Care Services provides medical care for small animals and exotics on an emergency basis and intensive 24-hour care to patients who are admitted for extended treatment. We simultaneously provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, graduate veterinarians, and others; conduct and support clinical research; and provide referral outreach to clients and referring veterinarians.
The position is required to report as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption. This position typically works 2 pm – 12 am (10-hour shifts) four days per week, but may be asked to adjust to meet the needs of the department and university.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications
Registered as a Veterinary Technician (VT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician ( PVT ) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ).
Graduate of accredited veterinary technician program with greater than three (3) years’ experience in veterinary emergency medicine.*Please note, a transcript or diploma must be attached to this application to demonstrate graduation from the vet tech program.
SUBSTITUTIONS :Candidates can qualify without graduation from a veterinary technician program if they demonstrate 4+ years of veterinary emergency medicine experience.

Effectively provides efficient, optimal patient care including: triage, assessment, stabilization, treatment, monitoring, and restraint.
Performs, supports and assists in advanced monitoring and treatment procedures under the orders of the attending clinician.
Monitors and assesses high risk and severely compromised patients; identifies critical and relevant changes and recommends adjustments to patient’s management.
Administers medications to highly compromised animals.
Collaborates with students, interns, residents, faculty clinicians, rDVMs, and clients to assist in formulating a diagnoses and optimal treatment plan. This is done by evaluating patient status and response to therapy, collecting diagnostic samples, and interpreting results. · Advocates for the well-being of the patient and the patient’s care including decisions for critical and physically dynamic patients that would require advanced procedures such as positive pressure ventilation or dialysis.
Provides clinical and technical expertise such as: intravenous (peripheral and central catheters), arterial, and urinary catheterization; fluid and drug administration; intravenous and arterial blood sampling; focused assessment with sonography for trauma ( FAST ); EKG and blood gas collection/interpretation; direct and indirect blood pressure monitoring/evaluation; pulse oximetry; capnography; operation and trouble-shooting of all specialty-related equipment; thoracocentesis and continuous evacuation; pericardiocentesis; emergency anesthesia; cystocentesis; multi-parameter monitoring; positive pressure ventilation and initiating and directing CPR .
Manages highly complex and advanced cases such as cardio bypass and positive pressure ventilator patients.
