The State of Connecticu t Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services ( DMHAS ) is currently recruiting for two (2) Registered Professional Nurse (Per Diem)! In this role, you'll provide compassionate bedside care and mental health services, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to support patients with psychiatric and addictive disorders. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

FACILITY: Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC )

LOCATION: New Haven , CT

UNIT: Inpatient Unit

SCHEDULE: Per Diem, Second and Third Shift

POSITION NUMBERS: 84815 145404

NOTE: Per Diem Nurses are required to work the following as determined by the Director of Nursing:

At least a minimum of two (2) shifts within a biweekly pay-period (1 shift per week)

One (1) weekend per month

Cover one (1) summer holiday (i.e. Memorial day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day)

Cover on (1) winter holiday (i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day)

CMHC is an urban community mental health center with an exceptional 50-year tradition of serving individuals with serious mental illness and/or addiction. Founded in 1966, CMHC is a partnership between DHMAS and the Yale Department of Psychiatry. CMHC is nationally recognized for its scientific research into the causes and treatment of mental illness and addiction. The Abraham Ribicoff Research Facilities include multiple research programs in a variety of areas. CMHC is also a major training site for individuals pursuing careers in mental health fields including psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing and pastoral care.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state hospital or facility works on a daily or hourly basis as a regular registered nurse, providing direct professional nursing care to a variety of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

May participate as an active member of the multidisciplinary treatment team by providing substantial input regarding the patient’s response to treatment and recommending modifications in the overall plan of care.

Works under the supervision of a Head Nurse.

Completes comprehensive Initial Nursing Assessments for inpatients with acute psychiatric and addictive problems.

Demonstrates interviewing skills that facilitate accurate and comprehensive data collection and documentation in the 24-hour Nursing Notes.

Accurately assesses and documents the patient’s response to pain interventions.

Fosters a cooperative working relationship among staff members of all disciplines.

Effectively assumes charge responsibilities when designated.

May cover for the Team Leader and may function in a charge role supervising LPNs and MHAs.

Ensures that all clinical documentation and progress notes are completed by MHAs and LPNs.

Identifies and maintains the safety of patients who are at imminent risk to self or others, including Risk to Fall, AWOL Risk, and medical instability.

Administers all medications in accordance with CMHC Standards of Practice and Nursing Policies and Procedures.

Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and assists in identifying patient problems and participating in team meetings.

Conducts inpatient groups such as community meetings, goals groups, and orientation.

Participates in implementing health teaching interventions with patients and/or family members.

Attends shift reports and participates in nursing and multidisciplinary staff meetings.

Ensures patient safety by conducting environmental safety rounds and ensuring that patient 15-minute, 30-minute checks, or 1:1 specials are assigned and that policies and procedures are followed.

Participates in the assessment and reassessment process by collecting data throughout the course of a shift hospitalization and documenting changes in mental status.

Evaluates and prescribes nursing treatment in crisis situations, makes effective decisions, and evaluates the results of actions taken.

May take charge of admissions and related processes.

May be required to participate in the application of restraints and assist in the de-escalation of behavioral dyscontrol in inpatients.

Must attend and remain up to date on all DMHAS and CMHC mandatory training.

Conducts and teaches patient debriefings following the use of seclusion and/or restraints in accordance with guidelines.

May be required to take clients to medical or clinical appointments, community outings, and fresh air breaks.

Effectively communicates patient care needs and ensures compliance with JCAHO and Medicare standards of nursing practice.

Performs all research-related activities, including blood draws, blood spinning, IVs, research protocol, and treatment plans.

Participates in all training and competencies related to individual research protocols.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of principles and practices of nursing;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited nursing program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and experience in psychiatric mental health nursing

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current license or temporary permit to practice professional nursing in Connecticut.

Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of American Sign Language in certain designated positions.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for permanent appointment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
