  What You Will Do

  The Technology Applications Group (A-3) is seeking an early career Mechanical Engineer to work on our nation's most pressing national security challenges. A-3 is home to a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise dedicated to delivering functional solutions for users across the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and Intelligence Community. A-3's core competencies include rapid concept development, mechanical design and evaluation, radio frequency design and analysis, custom electronic solutions, power infrastructure and systems, and electromagnetics research.

  A-3 has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer with experience in designing and developing instruments, mechanical systems, and experiments. In this position, the Mechanical Engineer will interact with scientists, technicians, and customers as part of a team to transform novel concepts and designs into deliverable products, often needed on short timescales to meet A-3's Global Security mission. The Mechanical Engineer will participate in activities including hardware design and testing, field experimentation, and customer training. Most project work is conducted at the Q and SCI levels, requiring that the selected candidates maintain the corresponding security clearances.

  This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or R&D Engineer 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

  R&D Mechanical Engineer 1 ($90,000- $147,100)

  To support the duties outlined above, the Mechanical Engineer 1 will be required to:

  Contribute to design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering solutions. Contribute to the completion of milestones associated with specific project.

  Develop technical expertise and knowledge within a discipline and develop new skills in related disciplines. May attain additional certifications and/or qualifications, including more advanced educational degrees.

  Apply mechanical engineering principles, techniques, methods, and tools to provide solutions for a diverse range of complex problems.

  R&D Mechanical Engineer 2 ($99,200-$164,100)

  In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Mechanical Engineer 2 will be required to:

  Assist in the development of new projects/programs to address complex national security challenges. Work with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team to deliver technical solutions.

  Set direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scope tasks within a project and define deliverables at task level. Lead specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule, and budget.

  Provide peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines.

  Develop mentoring skills to mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth.

  What You Need

  Minimum Job Requirements:

  Technical Knowledge

  Knowledge of mechanical engineering disciplines and the ability to creatively apply engineering principles and theories to solve technical problems. Proficiency with mechanical modeling and analysis software (e.g., Creo, SOLIDWORKS, Simulation, Ansys). Knowledge of design for manufacturability.

  Project Delivery

  Ability to work with shifting scopes, schedules, and budgets. Ability to work with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team to create novel solutions.

  Communication

  Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills (e.g., presentations, reports, and publications).

  Work Environment

  Willingness to work in an environment with hazards such as energized systems, high explosives, radiological materials, pressurized systems, or near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.

  Additional Job Requirements for R&D Mechanical Engineer 2:

  Technical Knowledge

  Demonstrated experience in mechanical engineering disciplines and the ability to creatively apply engineering principles and theories to solve technical problems. Demonstrated experience in design for manufacturability.

  Project Delivery

  Demonstrated ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently as well as in a team environment with engineers, scientists, and technicians.

  Education Requirements

  Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 2 years of related experience.

  Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education.

  Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

  Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

  Additional Details

  Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

  Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

  New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

  Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

  Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

  Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
