General Summary
Ensures the overall safety of guests in the aquatic area while on duty.
Under direct supervision of the Pool Manager and the Aquatic Supervisor, thehead lifeguard position is responsible for their assigned aquatic staff,patron surveillance and safety including general maintenance, cleaning andinspection of equipment in the Aquatics are of the Bob L. Burger RecreationCenter.Essential FunctionsThe following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be allinclusive:
Assign guards as conditions warrant to meet required lifeguard to patronratios; insuring cleaning, maintenance of aquatic areas are performed;test and make adjustments to water chemistry to meet health codes; keepdaily records on water chemistry, attendance, maintenance cleaning andcurrent inventory of pool supplies; requests new supplies as needed.Provide excellence in customer service. Deal with customerconcerns/problems in a friendly and professional manner.Enforce all City policies, pool rules, and regulations involving theoperation of the pool. Assist the Aquatics Supervisor in staff training.Responsible for setting a good example for all aquatic employees in conduct,dress and manners.Conduct routine safety checks of equipment and staff; ensure allpaperwork, i.e., course records, accident reports, etc., arecompleted accurately and in a timely manner.Continuously scan pools for patrons in distress, enforce all rules andpolicies, clean and maintain facility; perform rescues and administerFirst Aid according to standards as needed; assist with swim lessons.Respond quickly to emergencies; acts as problem solver betweenstudents/instructor or guard/patrons.Daily operations of a boathouse, follow protocol set forth by the City;including but not limited to assisting patrons in and out of paddleboats;determining appropriate weather conditions for safe operation; using a jetski to assist patrons back to boathouse during times of adverse conditions;labor intensive duties such as loading and unloading of paddle boats into andout of the water to boathouse; supervise cash controls from admissions,retrieving and returning cash and bank receipts from the recreation center atthe beginning and ending of shifts.Assist in maintenance/opening/closing of seasonal facilities.Perform related work as required and assigned.Typical QualificationsKNOWLEDGE: CPR and First Aid; knowledge of departmental rules concerningthe area in which assigned; and of Lifeguard philosophies, policies andprocedures; teaching methods and techniques.SKILL: Public relations skills; demonstrated skill in operation ofequipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.ABILITY: Prevent accidents; remain calm in emergency situations; workwith little or no supervision; analyze and correct facility safetyhazards; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; establishand maintain effective working relationships. Plan, organize, instructand supervise the assigned program. Deal tactfully with the public,sufficient strength to make rescues or move 50lb bags or buckets ofchemicals; stand for extended time periods. Ability to meet criteria asdescribed in Working Environment and Physical Demands section of thisdocument.TRAINING:American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard and First Aid, andCPR/AED required.EXPERIENCE:Previous aquatics experience, pool maintenance and swiminstruction preferred, or any equivalent combination of training andexperience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the requiredknowledge, skills and abilities.
Special RequirementsREQUIRED: Current Certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training,First Aid, CPR/AED.PREFERRED: Aquatic Facility Operator or Certified Pool Operator andLifeguard Instructor Certification.
