  DESCRIPTION OF WORK

  The primary function of this role is to conduct inspections, ensuring that the Southcentral and Northcentral areas of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania adhere to the radiological rules and regulations. This position involves carrying out advanced professional work that revolves around monitoring and controlling radiation sources, aiming to protect radiation workers and the general public from any avoidable exposure to radiation that can be controlled.

  Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  Full-time employment.

  Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  Overtime required as needed.

  Occasional travel required for inspections.

  Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

  REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

  QUALIFICATIONS

  Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  One year of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and possession of a certificate of registration issued by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists; or

  Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics; or

  One year as a Radiation Health Physicist 1; or

  Two years of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation physics, radiation biology, nuclear physics, or applied health physics; or

  Two years of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree with major course work in the physical, biological, or radiological sciences or in nuclear engineering, that includes 20 credits in health physics or radiological sciences; or

  An equivalent combination of experience and training.

  Special Requirement

  This position requires possession of an active non-commercial PA Class C driver’s license or equivalent.

  WORK BEHAVIOR 2 – INSPECTIONS AND COMPLIANCE EVALUATIONS

  Plan, conduct, and/or review inspections of facilities (e.g. nuclear power plants, broad scope license, private medical/dental offices, radon laboratory, etc.) in possession of radiation producing machines and radioactive materials, or involved in radon testing/mitigation/laboratory analysis to determine compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to workers' qualifications, the health and safety of workers and others, the conditions of radiological equipment, the work practices of radiological equipment operators, the storage and disposal of radioactive material, the appropriate use of detection devices, the maintenance of records, etc.; evaluate license requirements and adherence to license conditions; review prior inspection reports and determine equipment needed for inspection; review written procedures, check records and analyze safety data; verify inventory of sources, operate radiological equipment, take dose measurements/samples, and evaluate results using various radiation detection devices; provide guidance and technical assistance for improving operations; and approve inspection reports. Inspect radon mitigation systems in homes, radon laboratories, and testers for conformance to established standards; and inspect facilities that perform mammography under the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) contract with the Food and Drug Administration for compliance and optimizing image quality.
