Principal Investigator, Maya Koronyo, PhD is looking for a Project Scientist to join the team!
The primary focus of the Koronyo-Hamaoui laboratory is on early diagnosis and immune-based therapies for Alzheimer's disease (AD). To learn more about this type research, please visit the Koronyo-Hamaoui Lab.
The Project Scientist works on research projects in the lab and conducts research in one or more areas in the lab according to the PI instructions:
Neuroimmune and epigenetic mechanisms of CNS repair and regeneration;
Immune-based and epigenome-based therapies for Alzheimer’s disease;
Retinal pathological features in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders for early diagnosis and monitoring response to therapy;
Microglial activation states in relations to retinal and brain pathology in Alzheimer’s disease.
The Project Scientist works independently and in full cooperation with the Principal Investigator to make significant and creative contributions to a research and/or a project relevant to our laboratory. The Project Scientist develops, prepares figures, analyzes data, and writes and submits peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication and grants in support of the laboratory research. The Project Scientist orients research laboratory assistants and student researchers on day-to-day lab operations and routine procedures. Supervises and provides technical support/guidance to all research staff per PI instructions. Ensures that our laboratory activities are maintained in accordance with CSMC policies and procedures, especially for human and animal studies with approved protocols.
The incumbent performs a variety of routine and advanced laboratory tasks and procedures to support the objectives of laboratory research projects. The Project Scientist develops a high-level skills and technical expertise in one or more areas relevant to our neuroimmunology, retinal pathology and imaging in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and related diseases. The Project Scientist participates in research activities involving all aspects of the research process, to include, but not limited to - investigation, technical, testing/validation of results, presenting and reporting findings. This role keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results, and assist in identifying and troubleshooting of unexpected results. The Project Scientist works on laboratory projects, designs experiments, formulates scientific ideas, writes manuscripts, and assists in grant writing. This includes all aspects, from the designing stage of the experiments to peer-reviewed publications of the results, securing funding, and presentations at relevant national and international scientific conferences.
The Project Scientist observes and follows safety standards and procedures. This position will carry out research or creative programs as well as administration of day-to-day lab operations with supervision by a member of the Professorial Series.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists in preparation of grant proposals, submissions, publications and presentations, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
May submit grant proposal independently and serve as PI for research as approved by a member of the Professorial Series.
Develops, adapts, and implements new research techniques and protocols.
Assists others with lab experiments as necessary and conducts own research experiments.
Analyzes, interprets, summarizes and compiles data.
Assists with administrative tasks and general management of laboratory resources.
Appointees on an academic trajectory will be expected to commit a portion of their time to developing an independent range of research.
Department-Specific Responsibilities:
Laboratory maintenance: restocking supplies, ordering new products, and management of current inventory.
Prepares buffers, stock reagents, solution, etc.
Monitors and fills liquid nitrogen in cryobiological storage tank.
Monitors the incubator for humidity and CO2 level.
Routine and specific laboratory tasks: flow cytometry, PCR, semi- and full-quantitative PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blot, ELISA, Flow cytometry, protein isolation and concentration, cell culture techniques, RNA/DNA isolation, transcriptomics, proteomics, bioinformatics knowledge for analysis of high-through-put data, tissue processing, immunohistochemical staining, cell counting, passaging of cells, animal model handling, tagging for identification and genotyping, as well as retinal and brain histological and stereological analyses, and advanced microscopy, etc.
Qualifications
Education:
Doctorate degree in the area of Neuroinflammation, and/or Neuroimmunology, Neuro-ophthalmology, Neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, or related research specialty is required.Experience and Skills:
Completion of postdoctoral appointment in area of specialization(Alzheimer’s disease, neuroimmunology and/or neuro-ophthalmology).
Strong background in both in vitro and in vivo experimentation.
Preferred training in Alzheimer’s disease, neuroimmunology and/or neuro-ophthalmology.
Ability to perform proliferation assays and to determine cell viability and cell death in vivo and in vitro is preferred.
Background in signal transduction methods are also desired.
Physical Requirements (physical abilities essential to perform the job):
Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds as well as stand and sit for long periods using computer and other laboratory equipment.
