SUMMARY
Through the Exploratorium’s Artists-in-Residence (AiR) program, artists work with staff and the visiting public to create original installations, exhibits, and performances while engaging in experimentation and research, developing new ideas and directions for their work. The Project Director, Artists-in-Residence leads the AiR program at the Exploratorium. Their responsibilities include directing, curating, and managing a portfolio of artists-in-residence. They also oversee the institutional infrastructure for the program, managing related budgets, projects, grants, and activities. Working closely with various museum staff, the Project Director ensures the successful implementation of AiR projects and programs. This position reports to the Chief Experience Officer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Strategy and Program Direction
Develop a strategic vision for short-term and long-term engagement within the Artists-in-Residence (AiR) program, aligning with the Exploratorium’s mission, vision, values, and audience needs, and provide overall project leadership for AiR initiatives
Direct project teams to lead all activity necessary for the successful completion of projects, ensuring project and institutional goals are met
Collaborate with departmental leadership across the organization to improve all aspects of the AiR program
Lead development of AiR activities in collaboration with internal collaborators and experts, and external content providers and collaborators
Anticipate, identify, and respond to issues related to AiR program support and implementation
Administration and Management
Oversee the AiR program-related budgets, prepare financial and grant expense reports for internal and external use, develop and oversee artist and consultant contracts, and work closely with the Administrative Director to manage budgets, tracking expenses, and revenue.
Coordinate with museum staff, outside contractors, and artists to manage special projects, programs, and complex installations
Ensure documentation and record-keeping of AiR projects and contacts, and serve as a point of contact for inquiries about the program
Communication and Outreach
Cultivate relationships and partnerships with relevant organizations, community groups, and individuals as necessary for program development
Facilitate the flow of communications to Media Studio, Floor Operations, Marketing, Visitor Services, Institutional Advancement, and content staff for AiR programs and projects
Design, implement, and supervise program systems and paperwork
Additional duties as assigned
Fundraising/Grants
Identify and review grant opportunities and participate in donor solicitations, grant writing, and grant stewardship in close collaboration with the Institutional Advancement Team
Foster and sustain positive relations with donors
Oversee the fulfillment of deliverables, documentation, evaluation, and reporting on all grant activities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
5 years’ experience managing Arts and/or artist residency programs and project activities or equivalent combination of education and experience in the Arts environment
Experience in managing the creative process for Arts projects and Artists to produce public experiences or the Arts in non-traditional Arts environments
Demonstrated ability to navigate complex organizational structures and processes
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with external collaborators and curators, as well as colleagues and subcontractors; demonstrated ability to lead collaborations with diverse individuals with multiple agendas
Proven track record in managing multiple projects and multi-year grants
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Successful track record with donor relations, grant development, grant reporting, and budget oversight
Ability to organize time effectively, set priorities, and quickly shift focus and work successfully on multiple projects
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and highly effective interpersonal skills
Experience with community-based partnerships or collaborations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in a non-profit art or science, informal education, or research & development environment
Experience in and knowledge of science, ecology, technology, and/or contemporary arts
