  Georgetown’s Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) (https://cied.georgetown.edu/) was founded in 1981 and is recognized as a leader in educational exchange programs for people around the world ranging from youth to senior business and public policy officials.

  Job Overview

  The Youth Ambassador (YA) Program provides an intensive and experimental three-week leadership development exchange program for youth (15-18) and adult youth leaders from 24 Western Hemisphere nations and the United States. The Program Manager ensures that approximately 182 YA participants per year (nine+ annual cohorts of approximately 20+ participants/cohort) receive excellent training and support while in the United States and in Latin America/Caribbean.

  Work Interactions

  The Program Manager creates, develops and implements the Washington, DC, training program, and has responsible oversight of all off-site programmatic and logistical aspects of the program. To gain an overall perspective of the United States, inbound students and mentor/teachers from Latin American and the Caribbean have the opportunity to participate in leadership development and cultural program with CIED Georgetown’s partners throughout the U.S. Likewise, the outbound U.S. participants engage in leadership development and cultural exchange in Belize and Costa Rica – or other approved country. The incumbent works with partner institutions to ensure that they plan and deliver the optimal program possible. This translates into the responsibility that each partner (university or non-profit organization) fully understands, supports, and is in full compliance with the YA program goals, Georgetown University policies, and terms of governing agreement with YA consortium leader, World Learning.

  Extensive knowledge of and work in the English-speaking Caribbean region and/or Haiti and experience with youth development and programming are crucial to the success and implementation of the program.

  The incumbent also works continuously with in-country partners and the U.S. Embassies in the participating countries to plan and ensure a transparent recruitment and selection process, successful pre-departure orientations (including securing all required paperwork – passport, visa, and parental permission forms), and implementation of group civic action activity following the exchange. They also oversee logistical program aspects such as coordinating complex air travel ticketing, welcome receptions, outbound preparations/orientations, and follow-on activities. The position requires significant travel (up to 3 weeks at a time) leading inbound and outbound cohorts. Following the exchange, the Program Manager maintains in communication with participants to ensure that students continue with the key principles and skills they obtained from the program. This includes the solicitation, review, approval, and development of participant-driven follow-on projects related to program themes.

  The Program Manager manages the administrative flow of information and documentation regarding participants – all application and all post-selection required parent, student, health insurance, and college forms, financial and program performance reports, contracts, and sub-agreements are completed and processed in a timely manner following all established procedures and deadlines. To guarantee the success of the YA program objectives, the Program Manager maintains excellent communication and fosters a spirit of teamwork with all stakeholders. The Program Manager supervises one to three student assistants and indirectly supervises 12-15 U.S. and in-country partner staff. Occasionally, the Program Manager undertakes additional duties as assigned by his/her supervisor or the director of CIED.

  Designs and develops exchange activities (U.S. and overseas):

  Develops and implements all activities for the Washington, DC-based activities of orientation, community service, entrepreneurial training, and cultural activities; Coordinates with partner institutions to develop interactive programs that support the program’s overall and specific mission, goals, and policies; Ensures training content and program structure in the U.S. and overseas are in full compliance with the approved proposal, budget, and sub-agreement; Directs the orientation, reception, and program wrap-up sessions for all participants. Makes all program logistics including air travel, ground transportation, lodging, meals, coordination of participant data for U.S. visas by Department of State (DOS) and other necessary services; Ensures that all partner and consultant sub-agreements and contracts are developed and completed. Assists the Director to identify potential new partners and is responsible for their training; Coordinates reception meeting for each YA participant cohort (and their training preparation) with the DOS and for the U.S. participants with Central American Ambassadors; Travels with inbound and outbound cohorts from YA countries (3 to 5 three-week trips per year).

  Provides program and administrative support:

  Develops strategies for recruitment of students and plans for orientation; Tracks status of applications and screens applicants to ensure they meet minimum program criteria; Oversees the review and approval of all follow-on (civic engagement) proposals, provides technical assistance, and coordinates funding and oversight of annual follow-on projects in ten countries; Carries out ongoing translation of documents from English-Spanish and Spanish-English or English-French and French-English (if applicable); Provides programmatic, administrative and financial technical support to partners in the U.S. and in Central America and the Caribbean.

  Reporting:

  Prepares quarterly Program Performance reports, quarterly alumni update reports, financial reports, and participant data reports and databases on assigned institutions and participants; Ensures that participants complete all DOS online survey evaluation tools in timely manner; Reviews expense reports from U.S. partners and in-country offices and coordinates financial matters with the CIED finance office; Overseas, coordinates, and manages service contact and payments covering the work and level of effort of Country Coordinators; Manages incoming participants, programmatic, and financial documents and reports; Ensures that all adult partners, staff, volunteers, and host families have complied with CIED and GU Protection of Minors protocols; Provides other services, reports, and special projects as assigned within YA, and CIED.

  Requirements and Qualifications

  Bachelor's degree and 0-2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience

  Extensive knowledge and experience living-working in Central America and the Caribbean region

  Excellent English writing and communication skills are

  Understanding of cross-cultural communication and management.

  Experience in education or leadership development with youth (adolescents).

  Preferred qualification

  Spanish proficiency

  French proficiency
