About Principal Technical Program Manager, Middle Mile Planning and Optimization

  Description

  It’s no secret that Amazon Freight Management (Middle Mile) is evolving from outsourcing freight to external trucking companies to managing it in-house partnering with our Line Haul Service Providers (LSPs). Our mission is to build the most efficient and optimal transportation solution on the planet, using our technology and engineering muscle as our biggest advantage and the key differentiating factor. With rapid expansion into new geographies, innovations in supply chain, unique delivery models for products ranging from Amazon Fresh groceries, ultra-fast Prime Now deliveries to big-screen TV’s, and growing number of shipments worldwide, we see a brand new opportunity to fundamentally change the way people get the stuff they need, and make a big impact by cutting billions of dollars of transportation costs from the ecosystem.

  We are building Day 1 products to predict, schedule and route thousands of units of freight containing millions of units on a weekly basis. We are building complex software solutions that work across our vendors, warehouses and carriers to optimize both time & cost of getting the packages delivered. Our services handle thousands of requests per second, make business decisions impacting billions of dollars a year, integrate with a network of small and large carriers, owner operators and drivers worldwide, manage business rules for millions of unique products, and improve ordering and delivery experience for millions of online shoppers.

  We are looking for an experienced Principal Technical Program Manager to tackle complex and ambiguous problems that span numerous systems and organizations. They will be a highly visible leader that will own the communication, coordination, and execution of a multi-year program vision. They will work with senior product and engineering leaders to define strategy and requirements. They will design, coordinate, and execute technical solutions that scale globally. Managing numerous complex systems and organizations, they will be expected to make appropriate trade-offs between business vs. technical constraints, clearly communicate goals, roles, and responsibilities. Working cross-functionally, they will identify and secure commitment from tech teams across the company for new initiatives, driving consensus on the technical approach. The ideal candidate will have a well-rounded, technical background as well as a history of leading large projects end-to-end. They will own the team efforts to coordinate and unify road maps and technical direction across multiple complex systems and own the launches. They will also identify opportunities to converge overlapping technical efforts, and drive the long-term strategy and manage the roadmap, change management process. Maturity, high level judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent, and leadership are essential to success.

  As a Principal Technical Program Manager, you will ensure the teams are delivering the highest quality products and services predictably while meeting the technical needs of our community. You will guide both strategy and tactical decision-making to deliver complex cross-team programs. As well as partner with program managers to help support the strategic deliverables while working with engineering to support important technical efforts.

  The role will require constant balance between long term product vision along with addressing immediate needs, driving an incremental approach that is metrics and data driven. It will require communicating effectively with leaders across Director and VP level on a regular basis while ensuring that the teams are aligned and stakeholders are aware of key performance indicators.

  Key job responsibilities

  You will be responsible for diving deep into technical systems, understanding them well and staying connected to the details

  You will be responsible for delivering results despite working in an ambiguous environment

  You will need a strong bias for action and be able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously

  You will define strategy and build and execute road maps for the programs you own

  You will be responsible for overall coordination, quality and productivity and will be the primary point of contact for world-wide stakeholders of programs that you run

  Throughout, you will internalize Amazon’s Leadership Principles, and live those into everyday practices to guide your programs to success

  Basic Qualifications

  7+ years of technical product or program management experience

  10+ years of working directly with engineering teams experience

  5+ years of software development experience

  Experience managing programs across cross functional teams, building processes and coordinating release schedules

  Preferred Qualifications

  8+ years of hands-on work managing complex technology projects experience

  Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $141,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $275,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
