About Principal Application Engineer (SRE)

  Discover. A brighter future.

With us, you’ll do meaningful work from Day 1. Our collaborative culture is built on three core behaviors: We Play to Win, We Get Better Every Day & We Succeed Together. And we mean it — we want you to grow and make a difference at one of the world's leading digital banking and payments companies. We value what makes you unique so that you have an opportunity to shine.

Come build your future, while being the reason millions of people find a brighter financial future with Discover.

  Job Description:

At Discover, be part of a culture where diversity, teamwork and collaboration reign. Join a company that is just as employee-focused as it is on its customers and is consistently awarded for both. We’re all about people, and our employees are why Discover is a great place to work. Be the reason we help millions of consumers build a brighter financial future and achieve yours along the way with a rewarding career.

We’re hiring a Principal Site Reliability Engineer in the Card Portfolio group to support Discover Card’s core platform. You’ll interact with product leaders and their teams supporting large-scale systems of record for all Cardholders as you get a chance to build up the SRE practice from the ground up.

The SRE function isn’t new across Discover. In Card Portfolio, we historically relied on our engineering teams to play that role when needed. Along the way, we’ve realized that we need to find a leader in this craft to define and execute on the “how”. Moreover, it opens the opportunity for this leader to contribute both internally and externally across the SRE community.

Do you want to help us make reliability a product differentiator for our organization?

  What you’ll do:

Oversee the availability, performance, and reliability of our critical services, collaborating closely with product teams

Define and implement observability strategies across our product teams

Lead investigations into service problems (blameless post-mortems) and surface themes to enhance overall system reliability

Partner with teams and provide hands-on training in observability, incident management, and reliability best practices (i.e., defining SLOs, support playbooks, logging standards, etc.)

Roll up your sleeves as needed to pair with engineers on troubleshooting, pairing, or code reviews

Actively manage, escalate risk and customer-impacting issues to management within the day-to-day role

  Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:

Bachelors – Computer Science or related

6+ Years -- Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related

Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of proficient on the Dreyfus engineering scale

  Preferred Qualifications

  Bonus Points If You Have:

3+ years in an SRE or DevOps role

Experience with DevOps tools, processes, and culture

Extensive experience leading customer facing systems in a mission critical environment

Advanced experience with programming and/or scripting languages (Python, Java, bash)

In depth knowledge on application development landscape - Java, Rest API, design patterns and CI/CD.

Extensive experience with monitoring and observability tools/technologies (i.e., Grafana, Kibana, Datadog, AppDynamics)
