Responsibilities Working as a member of a crew engaged in laying and breaking discharge pipeline and in constructing and repairing disposal systems. Laying pipeline using connection bars to lock sections together. Extending lines by rolling pipe over assembled pipe used as a track for this purpose. Disconnecting pipeline by prying loose at joints using connection bars. Digging underground passes for running pipeline beneath roadways. Performing rough carpentry duties in building pipeline trestles, splash boards, spillways, sump boxes and other wooden structures peculiar to a disposal area. Performing those deck maintenance, repair, general housekeeping and miscellaneous duties peculiar to maritime activities. Assisting tradesman and higher grade crew members in repairing and overhauling equipment by dismantling, adjusting and reassembling as directed. Using hand tools such as drills, impact wrenches, saws, etc. in accomplishing tasks. (This authority is primarily being used to appoint qualified candidates who are not existing Department of Defense competitive service employees with permanent status. Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Pipeline Worker without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate you have the ability to perform common pipeline installation and repair; complete tasks from beginning to end as described in oral and written instruments or basic orders; install and maintain piping systems. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official. Physical Efforts:Exerts very heavy physical effort in performace of duties. May frequently be required to lift objects weighing over 50 pounds. Working Conditions:Pipeline work is performed in marshy land in all weather conditions. Disagreeable odors occur frequently. The possibility of being-cut or bruised when using saws, axes and hammers exists. Serious injury may occur when moving pipeline capable of crushing hands and toes. Deckhand work is performed inside and outside under all weather conditions. The danger of being hit by swinging equipment or being lifted exists. Exposed to paint fumes and eye injuries when chipping. There is a possibility of cutting or bruising fingers. The danger of slipping or falling, especially under wet or icy conditions, with the danger of drowning, is frequently present. Work may require the incumbent to perform at heights of 8'-32' depending on the nature of assignment. Education This position does not have an education requirement.
