Much of the project work will be related to the project entitled: "Increasing Golden Shiner Production to Protect Aquatic Communities." This is an LCCMR funded project with a deadline of June 30, 2024. The technician will work closely with University of Minnesota Sea Grant (MNSG) fisheries and aquaculture extension educators on entering, manipulating and analyzing data collected from various partners working on this project. Once data manipulation has been completed and reviewed, visual output (graphics/tables) will be discussed with the technician and draft graphics will be produced by the technician for review by MNSG staff. The technician must be reliable, organized, exhibit good attention to detail, and demonstrate basic math/statistics, data entry, data manipulation and graphic skills. Supervision will come from Minnesota Sea Grant Fisheries and Aquaculture Extension Educator, Amy Schrank. Don Schreiner, MNSG Fisheries Specialist, will oversee and assist with the technician's daily work and provide work assignments and review as appropriate. Job tasks and essential functions The fisheries research technician will focus the majority of their efforts on UMN-Duluth campus where fish samples will be measured, weighed, sorted by species and data generated will be entered into an excel spreadsheet. Environmental variables (temperature, oxygen, water quality variables, etc.), feed rations, and fish growth are all examples of the type of data that will be entered and worked with. All data will be proofed and must be error free before any data manipulation occurs. Once data manipulation is complete and has been reviewed by MNSG fisheries staff, draft graphic output will be produced (PowerPoint, other graphics programs). Work will be mainly independent after initial introduction with at least weekly interaction with MNSG fisheries staff. The major responsibilities for this position fall under the goal of the Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture focus area of MNSG. Job tasks may include: Measuring and weighing fish Sorting and identifying fish to species Entering environmental, feed and fish growth data collected by partners - hard copy to electronic format Error checking data once entered Manipulating and summarizing data Producing graphic output and tables after discussion with MNSG fisheries staff Ensuring quality control in all aspects and at all stages Ensuring there are duplicate and back-up copies of all records and output Qualifications Required qualifications: Ability to comply with all training requirements and certifications in a timely manner. Must be organized, highly responsible, detail oriented, and willing to work both independently and at times as a team member. Must have a positive attitude and commitment to staying on schedule with data entry Must be able to work independently, follow detailed instruction (both written and oral), while recognizing when assistance is required. Must understand and demonstrate use of basic math skills and experience with some simple statistical analysis and software Experience entering, proofing, and manipulating/summarizing data using MS Excel software Ability to create graphics in excel, including confidence intervals where appropriate and be able to export data and or graphics to MS PowerPoint Must be able to commit to a mutually agreed upon work schedule and meet with MNSG fisheries staff as appropriate Preferred qualifications: Training in scientific research methodology with experience in both lab research and field data collection. B.S. degree with demonstrated relevant work experience and/or M.S with field and lab experience working with fish. Experience with fish I. D. in the field or lab High level of organizational and planning skills. Experience in working in a team towards a project goal.
