Summary WG-5 Motor Vehicle Operators are assigned to Environmental Management Service (EMS) of VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and required to operate motor vehicles to include passenger vans, trash removal trucks, cargo vans, etc., with an approximate gross weight of less than 36,000 pounds. Vehicles are driven on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules to transport passengers, patients, supplies, materials, equipment and tools, or to tow equipment. Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities include: Operates vehicles such as shuttle carts/golf carts, vans, pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, and sports utility vehicles which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds). Handles cargo loading and unloading from vehicles to provide timely delivery of supplies and equipment directly to users or to storage areas and completes documentation to record activities. Secures cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity. Loads and unloads by hand but may use a handcart to transport items. Protects materials, supplies and equipment from the elements. Vehicle transport includes medical and office supplies, equipment, and mail over Federal, State and Country roads in all traffic conditions, on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules. Performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure. Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance of both the in and outside of the vehicle. Completes all maintenance service records to document activities. Provides courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the facility campus. Assists in areas like the warehouse to receive, store, and move materials and equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: A Motor Vehicle Operator at this grade level exerts physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. The Motor Vehicle Operator exerts physical effort in the frequent handling of objects up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Moderate physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment, because of the use of safety chains, tow- bars and hooks, which must be lifted and properly secured. Considerable physical effort may be required to perform frequent and prolong walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, kneeling and crawling. The incumbent frequently lifts heavy objects such as bag of fertilizer, grass seed, ice melt, furniture and cargo to include boxes of x-rays weighing up to 50 pounds. The incumbent is also required to assist patients into and out of vehicles. Working Conditions: The incumbent is also required to drive in all types of weather, in heavy traffic, on the Interstate highways and on other public roads. The incumbent is exposed to exhaust fumes, noise levels, possibly serious accidents and other hazards normally associated with freeway driving. The incumbent drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds, over complicated road and interchange systems. The incumbent may also be required to perform certain types of work that is mostly outside. The incumbent is subject to long periods in the sun or rainy weather and chilly or cold weather. The incumbent may be exposed to direct, dust, mud and chemical sprays. The incumbent may receive minor injuries such as bruises, cuts and scrapes. Education There is no education substitution for this position.
