  The Mental Health Technician (MHT) III Trainer primary role is to provide training, reeducation, and mentorship to all hospital staff regarding the Hospital’s de-escalation and restraint training techniques, and CPR certifications. The compliance MHT III also observes and assists assigned mental health patients and helps with daily living activities, therapeutic activities, and socialization. MHTs are responsible for the overall maintenance of a therapeutic environment in a unit and to ensure safety of patients and staff.

  Essential Duties:

  · Maintains instructors’ license to serve as instructor for trainings which may include SAMA, CPR, and BLS if applicable.

  · Is internally certified to train others in new hire and/or annual competencies, etc.

  · Assesses and coaches MHT performance. Implements performance improvement strategies per department leadership.

  · Creates guides/templates for group presentations, gets feedback and appropriate approvals from supervisor and clinical team prior to implementation.

  · Serves on hospital established ad hoc committees, such a FMEA, to improve processes.

  · Successfully completes projects to improve process/system at the hospital as directed by the Director QPIRMC.

  · Provides pertinent feedback to the interdisciplinary treatment team regarding patient response to treatment interventions that assists in the development and revision of the treatment plan.

  · Employs principles of communication, interviewing techniques, problem-solving and crisis intervention when performing psychotherapeutic interventions based on plan of care.

  · Maintains a safe environment by performing contraband checks, orienting the individual to safety rules and adhering to all Hospital policies.

  · Leads and educates other MHTs to conduct patient groups including community or skills groups.

  · Serves as an orientation coach and trains MHTs on proper group facilitation, how to maintain therapeutic group dynamic, and provide direction on policies, procedures, and process.

  · Teaches MHTs to Identify and act to prevent potential crisis situations and appropriately manage individual.

  Provides care to patients in a manner that promotes safety, comfort, and the therapeutic environment.

  Assists patients with activities of daily living; attends to patient behavioral problems and provides assistance in crisis intervention, as needed.

  Works with other members of a multi-disciplinary team in leading milieu activities such as current events groups, community meetings, goals groups, fitness groups, activities of daily living groups, and/or recreational activities, as appropriate to the specified patient population.

  Charts patient observations, following prescribed procedures and standards.

  Participates in the development and implementation of patient treatment programs.

  Maintains confidentiality of patient records.

  Transport patients to and from appointments, clinics, laboratories, and/or treatments, as and when appropriate.

  May perform initial patient evaluations to determine treatment priorities; may take vital signs, weights, and urine, stool, and sputum specimens.

  Attends and participates in group sessions, in-service education, and staff meetings.

  Maintains established institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, and safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings and workshops.

  May provide liaison with patients, families of patients, or external facilities and agencies.

  Ensures staff direct or restrain patients using SAMA techniques in order to prevent injury to themselves or others, and provides assistance or corrective action when necessary.

  Promptly reports patient issues to the Director QPIRMC.

  Performs other related duties as assigned by senior leadership.

  Requirements

  Education and/or Licensure – High School degree (or equivalent). Undergraduate degree in Behavioral Science preferred. Must possess a valid CPR certification and SAMA training. Must maintain instructors’ license to serve as a master trainer for SAMA and BLS.

  Experience – One (1) year experience as an MHT III AND 3 years in a healthcare setting with direct patient contact or displays the ability to serve in a senior capacity. Prefer experience psychiatric/mental health setting or appropriate therapeutic field. May consider combination of advanced education and experience.

  · Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.

  · Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.

  · Ability to provide therapeutic patient care to mentally, emotionally and/or developmentally disabled individuals.

  · Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.

  · Ability to assess and provide for the day-to-day needs of mentally, emotionally and/or developmentally disabled patients.

  · Ability to safely lift, and physically manipulate patients.

  · Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records.

  · Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.

  · Ability to communicate and interact with mental health professionals in a team environment.

  · Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.

  · Must be able to concentrate on work amidst distractions such as noise, conversations and foot traffic; must be able to consistently meet deadlines; must be flexible in work hours in order to meet patient and organization operating needs.

  · Must maintain self-control in volatile or hostile customer services interactions.

  · Use of appropriate social skills, including demonstration and respect for patients and staff; empathy toward patients; skills in teaching or assisting with activities of daily living helpful.

  · Must be able to work independently, in a result restricted physical environment for extended periods of time.

  · Skill to independently interpret reference materials to comply with law, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, etc.

  · Ability to apply time management practices to prioritize, schedule and complete work effectively to comply with mandated policies and deadlines.

  · Ability to work on multiple tasks or parts of tasks simultaneously to ensure timely completion of work activities.

  · Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

  · Perform the following with or without reasonable accommodations:

  · Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and be able to perceive the attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, and/or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.

  · Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word during activities in which they must convey detail or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly.

  · Hearing to perceive the nature of sound with no less than 40 db loss @ Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without correction; ability to perceive detailed information orally and make fine discriminations in sound.

  · Perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers. Individual must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and to be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

  · Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction that will enable people in the role to complete administrative and clerical tasks, as well as inspect and analyze.

  · Must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions such as noise, conversation and foot traffic; ability to handle interruptions often and be able to move from one task to another

  · While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.
